The small hole found at the top of many ballpoint pen caps may look like a simple design feature, but it serves an important safety purpose. According to a claim these holes help reduce the risk of choking.
The safety idea dates back to concerns about children accidentally swallowing or inhaling pen caps. In the United Kingdom, several children reportedly passed away after choking on pen caps between 1970 and 1984. In response to such incidents, the UK introduced a safety standard, BS 7272, in 1990. The standard encouraged the use of vented pen caps designed to reduce the risk of suffocation if a cap becomes lodged in a person's airway.
BIC was among the companies that adopted the approach. The company began adding holes to the caps of its popular BIC Cristal pens around the same period and later applied the practice internationally. The holes allow air to pass through the cap, meaning that if someone accidentally inhales or swallows a cap and it becomes stuck, the opening can potentially allow some airflow and reduce the risk of complete airway blockage.
The safety principle later became part of the international ISO 11540 standard. First introduced in 1993 and subsequently revised in 2014 and 2021, the standard covers writing and marking instruments that could reasonably be used by children up to the age of 14. It establishes requirements intended to reduce the risk of asphyxiation caused by pen caps.
Pen manufacturers can meet the safety requirements in different ways. Some caps have one small hole, while others, such as certain marker caps, may contain several openings. Another option is to design the cap large enough that it cannot easily be swallowed.
Interestingly, the hole in a BIC pen should not be confused with the separate opening found in the body of some pens. The opening in the clear barrel of a BIC Cristal helps balance air pressure so that ink can flow properly. The cap's opening, however, is primarily associated with safety and ventilation.
The BIC Cristal itself has a long history. It was created in France in 1950 after BIC founder Marcel B**h acquired the rights to a pen design developed by László Bíró. The pen went on to become one of the world's best-known writing instruments.
Today, many ballpoint pen manufacturers follow similar safety standards. So, the tiny hole in a pen cap is more than a decorative detail: it is part of a design intended to help reduce the potentially fatal consequences of accidental choking.

JCB’s hydrogen-powered engine is an important development in the construction industry because it offers a possible alternative to traditional diesel engines. The company has developed a hydrogen combustion engine designed to power construction and agricultural equipment while producing much lower carbon emissions during operation.
Unlike a battery-electric machine, the hydrogen engine burns hydrogen as its fuel inside an engine. This means it works in a way that is more similar to a conventional diesel engine, allowing JCB to use familiar engine technology while replacing fossil fuel with hydrogen.
The approval for sale and use is significant because it means the technology has passed the required regulatory and safety checks in the relevant market. It allows customers to purchase and operate equipment powered by JCB’s hydrogen engine under the approved regulations.
JCB has been developing hydrogen combustion technology for several years, particularly for heavy machinery. The company argues that hydrogen can be useful for construction equipment because large machines often need high power and operate for long periods. Charging large batteries can take time and may require heavy battery packs, while hydrogen can potentially be refuelled more quickly.
However, hydrogen engines are not completely emissions-free. When hydrogen is burned in an engine, there can still be nitrogen oxide emissions, depending on how the engine operates. The overall environmental benefit also depends on how the hydrogen is produced. Hydrogen made using renewable energy generally offers greater emissions reductions than hydrogen produced from fossil fuels.
The approval therefore represents an important step rather than the end of the development process. JCB’s technology could provide construction companies with another option for reducing their dependence on diesel, particularly in applications where battery-electric machines may be difficult to use.
In simple terms, JCB is adapting the familiar combustion-engine concept to run on hydrogen, potentially giving heavy machinery a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel power.
