The incredible Finale to Mozart's 'Jupiter' Symphony. An impressive structure that culminates at the end with a masterful fugue of 30 bars in quintuple counterpoint: probably a homage to the legacy of the Bach musical family. You can find the number 30 also by counting the semitone steps upwards to reach the highest note of this Fugue, F in the flute, and downwards to reach the lowest note, G in the double-bass starting from middle C on which the Fugue begins. How many themes are in this movement, and what is the meaning of this ultra-dynamic piece of music? These questions have puzzled scholars and performers until this very day. What is your answer? Enjoy!

Here is the third movement of the 'Jupiter'. the best way to understand this unusual Minuet and Trio is to think of a Royal ball at the time when Mozart use to animate them during the Carnival season of 1788. It was the time when soldiers would make their last public appearance before leaving for the war front. The smiling mouths proper to the decorum of the dance of the Minuet would disguise the tears in these last moments soldiers would share with their loved ones. The Trio in the style of a Deutscher (a German dance) with its sarcasm and the character of a masquerade would help instead raise the morale of the soldiers, disperse fears, and make them confident in their final victory.

The wonderful second movement from W.A. Mozart's Jupiter Symphony conducted by Marco Bellasi. You can sense in this movement that Mozart learned from the Pastoral scene in Gluck's opera 'Orfeo and Euridice'. We can picture in this movement a man searching for courage and nobility in his inner self as he is inspired by the beautiful surroundings of nature. However, winds of war expressed musically in the style of the 'Sturm Und Drang' mingled with military fanfares bring him back to the difficult reality of his life and of the challenges lying ahead.
