Which bass drum mic is best?!

The answer is the all of them…. In the right context!

AKG D112 - Some love it, others hate it. 🥁

Personally I’ve never had much luck with this mic on a bass drum. But I LOVE IT on floor toms and bass amps! However it does shine on anything more vintage sounding.

Electrovoice RE20 - The Elephant’s C*** 🐘

A studio classic! Loved by many engineers on all sorts of instruments from bass drums, to guitars, to vocals! I really love how tight the drum sounds with this mic, leaving lots of space for big lows in the bass!

SE V-Kick

A modern classic! (pun intended)We’re using it in “classic mode here to match it closer to the other mics. It’s punchy, cuts through the mix and pairs really well with a boundary mic inside the drum.

I often find myself reaching for the SE as it works in most situations but sometimes the track calls for something more “vintage”.

Podcast tip of the day! At Boxyard Studios we use the Automatic Mic Mixer (AMM) in our QU-6D and the compression add-ons to ensure your podcast is broadcast ready.
