Celebrating Richard Strauss, born on this day in 1864.

One of music’s great storytellers, Strauss had an extraordinary gift for colour, drama and sweeping melodic beauty - from the vast mountain landscapes of An Alpine Symphony to the heroic scale of Ein Heldenleben.

As he once wrote:

“Melody as revealed in the greatest works of our classics is one of the most noble gifts which an invisible deity has bestowed on mankind.”

You can hear Richard Strauss’s music at The Bridgewater Hall in the coming months, including BBC Philharmonic Orchestra’s Alpine Symphony, Hallé performances featuring his Oboe Concerto and Ein Heldenleben, and music by Strauss in the Hallé’s Viennese New Year concert.

As part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, The Bridgewater Hall is inviting the public to take the stage and share their story. We’re partnering with Heard Storytelling for a special Live at Lunchtime event, ‘It Happened Here’ on Friday 18 September; a powerful hour of short, personal stories about what the Hall has meant to the people who’ve experienced it.

We’re holding back one speaker place for a public submission. Have you performed here, worked here, attended a life-changing concert, or taken part in a project that stayed with you? We’d love to hear your story. The selected speaker will deliver a 4–5 minute talk, with a favourite or iconic piece of music performed live as their walk-on and walk-off moment.

Submit your story via this form and help us celebrate the moments that made this place special: https://forms.gle/6aUVWrX1RWW3c8BZ8

Five years ago today, we welcomed audiences back to The Bridgewater Hall for the first time since the COVID lockdowns.

On 3 June 2021, The Hallé opened its Summer Season with Elgar’s Enigma Variations, performed twice in one day to socially distanced audiences. After more than a year of silence, Sir Mark Elder returned to the podium, the orchestra returned to the stage, and live music returned to the Hall.

It was a deeply emotional moment - not just for the musicians and staff, but for everyone who had missed the shared experience of hearing music performed live.

Five years on, we’re remembering that very special day, and the warmth, patience and loyalty of the audiences who helped bring live music back to The Bridgewater Hall. Thank you.
