MCR:CLASSICAL will see the Hall, The Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata, Manchester Collective, and many others come together for a weekend of music, food, crafts and free foyer entertainment all in and around The Bridgewater Hall!
There will be hour long concerts throughout the weekend on the main stage featuring dazzling orchestral music from iconic symphonic works to hypnotic minimalist masterpieces. Manchester’s world-beating music ensembles will host world-class artists for whom the boundaries between classical and contemporary, experimental and jazz are blurred.

On this day in 1881, composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist, Béla Bartók was born. With a musical style that reflected the changing trends in 20th century music, Bartók is not only considered one of Hungary's greatest composers, but one of the most important composers of the 20th century. His exploration of Hungarian, Algerian, Turkish folk music and folk music of the Carpathian Basin, led him to become one of the founders of comparative musicology. Today, Bartók’s legacy lies in four major areas of music - composition, performance, pedagogy, and ethnomusicology.

Today marks 28 years (23 March 1995) since the celebratory ritual of ‘topping out’ was performed on the construction site of The Bridgewater Hall.
For those who don’t know, topping out was once a common ceremony performed when the highest point of a significant, new building is reached. Involving a branch of yew being combined into the fabric of the building to promote longevity and appease spirits, we hope the spell continues to work!

On this day in 1993, excavators sliced through 200 years of history, as ground was broken to begin construction of the Hall.
Before the Hall was the international concert hall we know and love today, the site where it was erected had a varied past, having been home to: open fields, a tributary of the River Tib, mills, gas works, chemical factories and Lower Mosley Street Bus Station. What a journey!

Born on this day 1810, Polish composer Frédéric François Chopin. Renowned for his compositions and as a virtuoso pianist, Chopin was a leading musician of the Romantic period and one of music's earliest celebrities. A child prodigy, Chopin created over 230 works for the piano during his short life, including piano concertos, chamber music and other songs. Chopin’s compositions were known for being technically demanding and expanded the limits of the piano and as such his works remain popular today.

Next week, Saturday 8 October, we welcome the London Philharmonic Orchestra and renowned conductor Edward Gardner, performing alongside one of the country’s leading pianists, Benjamin Grosvenor.
