Gerry and Stella, played by Ciarán Hinds and Lesley Manville, are a late-middle-aged couple from Northern Ireland who left for Scotland in the 1970s, traumatised by the Troubles, and are taking a restorative midwinter break in Amsterdam. They appear perfectly happy and affectionate, but Gerry has a drinking problem and Stella feels lonely because Gerry does not share her Catholic faith. In Amsterdam, Stella is struck with epiphanic rapture at the peaceful beauty of the Begijnhof, the city’s enclosed 14th-century courtyard that historically housed unmarried Catholic women who wanted to devote themselves to God.
Stella realises that she wants nothing more than to live there as well. She can suddenly see, with pitiless clarity, how she has always hated Gerry’s genial mockery of her religion; perhaps she has always hated him, too. And she confesses to Kathy (Niamh Cusack), an Irish expatriate in the city, a terrible secret about her time in Northern Ireland that she has never told anyone.

While people across 1990’s Iraq struggle to survive, 9-year-old Lamia has been selected to prepare a cake to celebrate the President’s birthday. In a landscape of fear and scarcity, where basic ingredients are nearly impossible to find, Lamia sets out on a determined journey throughout the big city in search of eggs, flour, and sugar. Accompanied by her grandmother, her loyal friend Saeed, and her pet rooster Hindi, she navigates vendors and police officers along the way. The film begins very deliberately, by simply following our heroine hen’s birth and escape from factory-farming shackles. “If you can go with the chicken after the first 15 or 20 minutes,” says Hungarian director György Pálfi, “then somehow you become the chicken, and people become a higher level, like the gods of ancient Greek mythology. It’s very interesting. That was the most important thing – to change the perspective.”

When the hen is rescued from the jaws of his dog by Giorgos, an ageing restaurateur whose shabby seaside business is shuttered for more than just a season, a human tragedy begins to unfold. Giorgos lives with his small granddaughter and his frustrated daughter whose ne’er-do-well boyfriend brings a modest smuggling operation – booze and f**s – to his door. While Hen enjoys a comic romantic encounter with the household cockerel, Giorgos is drawn into a more ambitious smuggling scheme: bringing people into Europe.

The avian actors are real, not Ai/CGI and are eight poultry thespians - Eszti, Szandi, Feri, Enci, Eti, Enikő, Nóra and Anett who were each trained for two months before the shoot. It turned out that each hen had a particular skill, one was good at running, another at pecking and a third kept beautifully still when required. So they chose whichever star would shine, given the requirements of the scene.

Taut as a drum, Vernon Sewell’s suspense thriller is an outstanding example of the lean British ‘B’ film has been re-released and remastered.

A carefully-planned heist on a suburban bank goes awry when the gang of three small-time criminals are interrupted by the unexpected arrival of two nattering cleaners. The gang lock the bank manager and his secretary in the airtight vault and make off with the cash. However, they soon realise that the pair will suffocate and the gang will face a murder rap if they can’t free them. With only 12 hours’ worth of air in the vault, the clock is ticking. Hailed by Tarantino, Scorsese and Edgar Wright, the film is a real discovery.
