, Elgar scribbled a little bit of himself into an autograph album for James Robert Sterndale Bennett (1847-1928), writer on music as well as son and biographer of the composer Sir William Sterndale Bennett.
At the top of the page Elgar notates 4 bars from Bennett’s cantata, The May Queen, and adds, “(Beautiful) pageant music, May Queen, W. Sterndale Bennett,” then adds his signature with the date October 8, 1915.
A really charming homage to James’s father – Elgar makes sure to tip his hat to Bennett senior and not himself.
