The Port Barges

The city of Porto on the River Douro in Portugal is the home of the Port Wine industry. Distilleries advertise their wares on the old Barges that used to bring the barrels of wine from the vineyards to the distilleries with colourful sails, lined up along the riverbank. I took the reference photo while on my way to a tour of one of the distilleries, including a tasting session.

Autumn Sunset Parish Church

Walking to meet friends in a Market Street bar in Westhoughton, the rain clouds lifted just in time to reveal a glorious sunset, the wet street shining with reflections. I took number of photos and used my favourite for this work. It's painted in acrylic on canvas.

Turner Street Westhoughton Autumn Sunshine

A lady living in one of these old cottages who liked my paintings, asked me to paint her home. The cottages are over 200 years old, on a quiet backwater. In my paintings I like to capture the mood of the day: the weather, the season, the time of day. As it was early autumn I waited for the type of day shown in the painting: bright sunshine with fluffy white clouds racing across the sky. My patience was rewarded and I took a series of reference photos. I used deep shadows on the road and in the trees to give the impression of bright sunshine.

Wet Queue

The food must be good in this Manchester city center bar/cafe if folk are prepared to wait outside for a table in the rain! At least the proprietors gave them umbrellas.
Watercolour on 140lb cold-pressed paper, W & N paints.
