Two mallards

I love the natural world, and I love birds, especially because of their fantastically complex and beautiful feathers, such amazing structures produced by DNA. I also love to see pairs of animals which are faithful to one another, as in this case.

Port barges at Porto

Along the River Douro in Portugal, on the opposite bank from the medieval city of Porto, are the old port houses where all the world famous port brands are made. For centuries the w**e from the vineyards along the river were brought in barrels in river barges. Today those barges are used to advertise the port brands on colourful sails. From a photo I took while on holiday. Footnote: the port was excellent.

Rochdale Canal Manchester

A view from Deansgate of the Rochdale Canal, with lots of aspects of the City's history in view. The Canal joins the Bridgewater Canal under the Railway Bridge. That bridge crosses over the original Roman Fort.

Poker time

30cm x 40cm oil on canvas

This is a commission from a friend, Steve Huxley at the Malta Open poker tournament at the end of 2025 after I suggested the reference photo would make a great painting. Whilst the reference photo wasn't the best quality, the composition was perfect and the imperfections made it easier to be looser with my brushstrokes.

The Port Barges

The city of Porto on the River Douro in Portugal is the home of the Port W**e industry. Distilleries advertise their wares on the old Barges that used to bring the barrels of w**e from the vineyards to the distilleries with colourful sails, lined up along the riverbank. I took the reference photo while on my way to a tour of one of the distilleries, including a tasting session.
