Leaving a mark on Tianyar!

For the past 5 weeks I have been volunteering at North Bali Reef Conservation in Tianyar. We worked to build, transport and deploy artificial reef structures to create a habitat for wildlife and coral to thrive.

In our free time, the rest of the volunteers and I decided to do a little redecorating and paint one of the walls. If you know me, it’s no surprise that I chose to paint a turtle! More specifically a Hawksbill turtle which is a species commonly found in and around Tianyar.

A painting from a while ago that I’m very proud of!

As some of you may know, I’m currently travelling! And although it is giving me lots of new and beautiful inspiration for my art, it is also helping me reflect on pieces that I have already created.

Creating with limited resources and on-the-go really does make you appreciate creating art in a still and unchanging environment (and oil paints🤣).

I painted this piece as a second entry to Spot on the wall, however it was never placed in the exhibition despite a personal love for it. I love the vibrancy of the colours, the movement and of course the human form, which has always been a personal favourite of mine to paint.

I am thoroughly enjoying painting the beautiful landscape around me and getting inspired by textures, colours and wildlife. However, this painting is a nice reminder of my abilities (which I have a tendency to doubt after long periods of not creating) and my passion for figurative work.

Quick little 20 minute monstera study, done in fine-liner, to keep the creative juices flowing!🪴

Only working on my art part-time can be challenging. I have to utilise my time to the fullest which can be difficult when you’re not constantly in a creative mindset.

I’ve recently found that small still life studies like this can help refocus my attention to my art practice. Putting a time limit on this is even more exciting to see what I can create when under pressure!

Sometimes these exercises are a lovely surprise at what I can produce and other times, not so much! But these trials and errors are crucial to keeping my art (and my want to experiment) alive✨

Some silly little watercolours and sketches that I did whilst interrailing last year🌍 These were a nice way to keep up my practice while being away from home and my studio. I was also surrounded by the most beautiful inspiration which helped too!!
