V nice article in I LOVE MANCHESTER about the exhibition, the launch is tomorrow, Saturday 2-4pm, come down and/or pls share this post if you can.
The exhibition and magazine publication highlight the centred creative process and the personal albums produced by participants featuring photographs from workshop sessions and day to day lives.
It also includes a 30 year retrospective from photographer Ian Johns, who originally graduated from Jamaica School of Art and has been determined to challenge negative stereotypes of the African Caribbean community. The work on show includes selected photos from Johns’ Fatherhood Projects. This work is testament to the role black Father’s play, recorded with the tenderness and empathy of shared experience.

Local people have come together at Powerhouse to portray some of the people and places around Moss Side and nearby that are familiar to them. Three sets of workshops with different ages from 8 to 80 years ran for a period of just six weeks, all groups developing skills in photography using disposable cameras and in creative writing.
The workshops were led by visual artist Leo Macdonald-Oulds from Segment Arts, with writer Nasima Bee from Young Identity and artist / photographer Ian Johns from First Cut and co-produced with Kooj Chuhan from Crossing Footprints. The groups captured a variety of everyday moments for a diverse range of lives, full of character, atmosphere, intimacy and a dash of humour. The material produced has been carefully edited into a magazine-style publication and a vibrant community exhibition. Come down and join us!

COMMUNITY PORTRAIT OF MOSS SIDE: FREE PHOTOGRAPHY, WRITING AND MAGAZINE MAKING WORKSHOPS.
We're in week 3 of this project but there is still space for a few people to join the 13-18 age group (in fact it's more of a 15-20 age group):
Join the Powerhouse Portraits Project and be part of a group creating a community portrait of and around Moss Side, have your work featured in a vibrant magazine and exhibition, also create your own photo album to take home. A set of 6 free workshops for young people aged from 13 years up to 18 years or so, living around or near the Moss Side area. Beginning on 23rd May the workshops take place every Tuesday 5pm-7pm at Powerhouse Community Centre and Library, 140 Raby Street, Moss Side M14 4SL. A few from a refugee background have signed up, among others, more would be welcome.
The workshops are led by visual artist Leo Macdonald-Oulds from Segment Arts, writer Nasima Bee from Young Identity, artist and photographer Ian Johns from First Cut Media and co-produced by digital artist Kooj Chuhan from Crossing Footprints. This is a fantastic opportunity to create something special that will have both artistic and community value for years to come. If you are interested, please sign up via our Eventbrite page at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/powerhouse-portraits-project-1318-year-olds-tickets-626925921307 .
