DIY with Anja Women's DIY Tutor, Handywoman, Interior Designer and Soap Maker based in Manchester. I consider myself an expressionist craftswoman with a fine art sensibility.

Hi, I'm Anja,

I’m a freelance wood and interior designer based in Manchester. My working interests are broad and ever-evolving, including woodwork, furniture design and improvisation from reclaimed materials as well as designing and re-imagining interior spaces. I spent the first part of my professional life favouring the analytical side of my brain and personality. With a degree in Sociology, Media Studies and English from Germany, I reported on British and American culture and society as a freelance journalist for German news outlets such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Der Tagesspiegel, Die Welt und ZEIT Online. I published numerous peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters in the field of popular music and fandom studies, and helped other scholars disseminate their work in the English-speaking scientific world in good English. In 2016, triggered in part by the death of my lifelong inspiration David Bowie, I began working creatively with tangible materials like wood, paints, stains and pieces of seemingly unsalvageable furniture. I have since designed my first series of coat racks which combine expressionist and abstract painting with a useful, but often bland piece of homeware. But don’t you let that put you off! To continuously add to my “vocabulary”, skill set and repertoire, I am attending courses at the Leeds College of Art and Design, Manchester DIY School, and soon the National Design Academy. When I’m not working in wood or breathing new life into sad and unimaginative spaces, I like to take long countryside walks with my dog Dixon, immerse myself in the Manchester jazz, art and theatre scene or travel to explore what other cities and cultures have to offer.

Day 29 of my 28-day refurb challenge

15/10/2026

Today I replaced two solid internal wooden doors with glazed doors to let more light flow through the house.

This wasn't exactly a job I was looking forward to! I needed it done today and couldn't find a joiner at such short notice, so I had to tackle it myself.

Joinery isn't my favourite thing. It requires so much precision, which isn't exactly my strong point. It's a real art, and I have a lot of respect for good joiners.

But when pushed, I can do it. And I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!

Here's a little time lapse of the process and the finished result.

Getting close to the finish line. Amazing help today from the creative genius that is Rachel. Still need another couple of days until completion unfortunately. Also a hiccup with carpet fitters today who didn't bring hardboard for the bathroom floor vinyl.

I had fab help from my friend Rachel yesterday on day 24 of my 28 day refurb challenge in an effort to finish the refurb by Wednesday. We put some good tunes on and she rocked the mist coat onto the bedroom while I was next door doing the grouting.

If anyone fancies a few hours of volunteer painting before Wednesday, please let me know. There is so much more painting to get through, it's insane.

Just a teeny tiny spanner in the works of my 28 day refurb challenge... my 15 year old dog Dixon got ill. This is us at the animal A&E last night. We don't know how serious it is yet and if it'll set me back. Obviously he comes first. He's felt a bit better today, but still has quite a high fever.
