‘When words fail, art speaks.’

Until the End of the World is a powerful exhibition that brings together eighteen of Gaza’s leading contemporary artists. It offers a vital insight into their daily, lived experience of injustice, brutality and war and how the participating artists have documented, interpreted and responded to the horror of the on-going catastrophe.

As participating artist, Shareef Sarhan reminds us: “In Gaza, art is not a luxury, it is an act of resistance. In every painting, in every idea transformed into a work of art, there is a message: ‘We are here.’”

Curator James Walmsley visited Gaza in 2015 and 2022, experiencing first hand the vitality and creativity of Eltiqa and Shababeek Studios, the two main artistic hubs in Gaza City, both now destroyed by Israeli bombs. During these visits, he also had the privilege of visiting the personal studios and homes of many of the participating artists, gaining insight into both their artistic practice and their lived experience. These encounters informed the exhibition’s conception and development and reflect a deep and personal admiration and respect for the artists’ courage, creativity and resilience.

As participating artist, Raed Issa, observes: “I believe that the act of creating art is itself an act of resistance, and the expression of beauty and creativity is a way of survival for me as an artist. Through my art, I represent my vision of resistance in relation to humanity and how this relates to the daily life of Palestinians.”

It is hoped that the exhibition will offer a vital platform for dialogue and solidarity and act as a catalyst for the participating artists to gain new connections, relationships and opportunities between themselves and Manchester based artists, organisations and institutions through partnerships, residencies and collaborations.

Until the End of the World is a tribute to the integrity and perseverance of the participating artists, and to the over forty visual artists who have been killed in Gaza over the past two years.
