‘Pushing up Daisies’ sits with the swampy blur between remembering and forgetting: the rose-tinted and mournful, false starts and idle afternoons.

Selected from an open call, this show gathers a mood of reflecting, retracing, wondering, wandering: a chain of works which spin and dance and fall despite themselves.

No booking is required but please follow government guidelines. Feel free to msg or email us any questions.

There will be a 🥀last ever view🥀 on 7th July 6-8pm and there will be 💐drinks💐

OPEN CALL: 3 DAYS TO GO

There’s 3 days left until the deadline for our open call

Please keep your submissions coming in, share this with your friends and find details of the call down below...

After five shows and a sporadic series of online output, Soft Spot are leaving the PS Mirabel basement. Before we dislodge and depart from our cellar, we are putting on one last show in the space (May date TBC).

This is an open call for creative work in any medium. We particularly encourage proposals that respond to or consider our basement space. We are also looking to soundtrack the show, so would love to receive tuneful and soundscape contributions.

Soft Spot operates without funding and are unable to offer an artist fee. We will happily accept pre-existing works, or work which has been previously shown elsewhere. We can also make contributions to transportation and installation costs.

If you're interested please send pdfs - jpegs - mp4s - mp3s along with a short description of your work to [email protected] by the 20th of April. All applicants will be notified via email by April 30th.

Any questions, DM or send us an email!

UNDERGROUND MANOEUVRES NOW STREAMING

Our sixth show Underground Manoeuvres is now streaming on our site (link in bio)

Underground Manoeuvres attempts to haunt an online space with places and instances which have become lost or otherwise inaccessible. These include grand designs, gone dawns and dusks, our own cellar space and the sun that is a stranger to it.

In The Poetics of Space (1957), Gaston Bachelard talks of the cellar in distinct opposition to the attic & other spaces in the house. According to Bachelard, the attic is a space of rationality, as “a roof tells its raison d’etre right away: It gives mankind shelter from (...) the sun he fears”. The cellar lacks such an irrefutable function, instead its holders find uses for it; It is rationalised, rather than rational. This is not to dismiss the cellar as useless, but rather to define it as a creative space.

A cellar is the habitable husk of the dirt that once occupied its capacity, and it is haunted by it's denseness. The undisturbed darkness and strange specificity of the cellar allows for deep rumination and dreaming “in harmony with the irrationality of the depths”.

Cyberspace is also a space of dreams, one step further from the subterranean, Cyberspace is non-terranean. In A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace (1996), the poet and cyberlibertarian John Perry Barlow refers to cyberspace as “the new home of mind”. The internet has since strayed far from, and grown out of this idea. Like real space, today's cyberspace has no one shape or aim; it is hostile, surreal, gorgeous and unfocused. And as in real space, dreamy corners and haunts can be found.

Through internet spaces we allow the distant and illusory to haunt us into cosiness. Recently I have reached for archived Just Chatting streams to fill the gaps in thoughts and augment my times alone. These archived streams feel like being alone and hanging out alike, like an annex in the home of mind.

Allow this space and the spaces that haunt it to augment your own. Take in the live stream, choose a username, and haunt one another through the chat.

See you there,
Soft Spot

Boo!
Show 6: Underground Manoeuvres opens this Saturday on our website. Originally curated as an online show with an IRL outpost in our cellar space, this show attempts to haunt an online space with physical spaces now lost or inaccessible.
We have created an online cellar of live streamed video works and a live chat.
Opening this Saturday at 17:00 when the sun sets and our cellar space would have closed.
Stay tuned for more information about artists and contributors in the next few days.
