Today we wanted to share some information about one of most iconic locations - The Village

Manchester has a thriving LGBTQ+ scene, centred around the world famous Canal Street – home of “The Village”. A beacon of celebration in the city, the Village is a must for any visitor to Manchester.

The village is not only a thriving hub for nightlife, but living proof that Manchester is one of the world’s leading gay-friendly cities.

Manchester was the first city in the world to commemorate its LGBT past by commissioning a local artist to set rainbow tiles into flagstones across the city, marking historical LGBT places of interest.

Decided to start a new series of post about our city and places you can go (with your take away coffee from us of course)

Today, we wanted to talk about a site right next to us - The Ashton Canal

The canal received its Act of Parliament in 1792.

It was built to supply coal from Oldham and Ashton under Lyne to Manchester.

The first section between Ancoats Lane to Ashton-under-Lyne and Hollinwood was completed in 1796, followed by the lines to Heaton Norris and Fairbottom in 1797

Although there were plans to link it to the Rochdale Canal, it opened as an isolated waterway.

Today, this Manchester canal is a green link from the city centre to Ashton-under-Lyne, bordered by an interesting mix of modern and industrial architecture

Improvements to the towpath have made it into a pleasant route, accessible to walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users.

Portland Basin Museum gives an insight into the heritage of the canal, with a reconstruction of a 1920s street, and information about the hat-making, textiles and coal industries in the area. Worth a visit :-)

Most importantly, in summer (cannot wait) it will provide a wonderful view from our beer garden 😊💫

Please meet Eric, everyone!

Eric is a retired gentleman in his 70s from Ancoats area in Manchester. Eric cycles every day and gives his time helping a local charity. In his free time, he loves to create. He’s very passionate about his art. Loves bright colours, recycling and the use of unorthodox techniques on his canvas.

We now have servers pieces of art from Eric in the Gallery Lounge. Just ask one of our team members upon visiting and they’ll show you to Eric’s art - or he may just be there himself, having a cuppa or a glass of red if it’s later in the evening :-)

Meet a couple of our lovely artists: Monika and Beata from Blackpool. They are the loveliest people! Very eccentric, they love to paint, mostly on canvas, but they create fantastic sculptures too. Besides this, they run a very popular tattoo studio in the centre of Blackpool. Have you seen them there before?

They are well proud of their work and so they should be!
