Over the past three Sundays, I have spent the most beautiful afternoons with a group of wonderful Ukrainian women. I had the honour of portraying them — not just their faces, but their strength, their tenderness, their quiet resilience.
There were smiles and laughter, the sweetness of cakes, warm cups of tea held between gentle hands, and conversations that unfolded slowly and honestly. We shared stories of leaving, of loss, of courage. At moments, tears fell softly — not only from sadness, but from remembering, from surviving, from being understood.
I invited my very talented friend to join us, and he captured them in the most stunning portrait sketches. Everyone was amazed by his gift — how a few lines could hold so much emotion and dignity.
What touched me most was this: although we all miss our home countries deeply, there was a sense of peace in the room. A feeling that, despite everything, we are building new lives here in the UK. We carry our memories, our cultures, and our love with us — but we are safe, we are connected, and we are alright.
