What are two main types of ad placements for podcasters?

- The First type is baked-in sponsorships. This is where the show host will read out a pitch promoting a particular product or service. These are 4x more successful than dynamically inserted advertisements, and make up 66% of ad revenue.

- The second type is dynamically inserted ads, which can be placed in a number of ways:

[1] Pre-Roll Ads: These are advertisements that appear at the beginning of the podcast.

[2] Mid-Roll Ads: Ads that appear during the podcast episode.

[3] Post-Roll Ads: Ads that appear once the podcast is over.

These ads are generated automatically based on audience interests. Mid-Rolls will generally get the most engagement due to the fact they are present within the main body of the podcast, where user engagement is at it’s peak. πŸ“ˆ

Not only does this open up ad revenue potential, it also opens up creative potential. So ensuring a podcast is seamlessly edited for the listener, and includes relevant ad placement is an essential part of the journey.

So first of all, make sure you have a punchy, direct name for the podcast, which includes any relevant keywords.

Secondly, you want a logo and/or artwork which reflects the feel of the show and grabs peoples attention.

And finally, include a clear and concise description of the show. This is vital, as this is your opportunity to really sell the podcast and let people know what to expect.

Background noise and feedback are common problems for podcasters using video chatting services such as Zoom & Google Meet.

So how can podcasters avoid these issues? Here are 3 simple things you can do at the recording stage.

🎧 Ensure all individual speakers/guests are wearing headphones, to prevent feedback from any sound emitted from a laptop or phone.

πŸ”‡Depending on living situations/location, it can be hard to avoid ALL background noise at the recording stage. However instructing speakers to put themselves on mute when they are not talking is great practise.

🀫 Finally, if possible…make sure you’re recording in a small, quiet room away from any potential noises.

Never has spoken word been so widely accessible, therefore ensuring a message is delivered as coherently as possible is a vital part of communicating in the audio medium. We want to keep peoples attention right? πŸ€”

There are many ways of maintaining continuity whilst editing. Cleaning up double takes, stumbles, uhms, arhs, repetitions & long pauses are a few key areas to consider. However, whatever type of podcast you’re producing, the clarity of the final mix & master also has a huge part to play in delivering impactful content.

At Aptus, we always edit with continuity in mind. After all, we want to feel our clients can trust us to deliver their message.

What audio formats should you be using, and when should you use them? πŸ”Š

Lossless audio formats (WAV & AIFF)

Using lossless (high quality) audio formats such as WAV & AIFF will help you maintain the highest possibly quality in your mix down. Lossless audio formats are equal in quality to that of the raw audio source. For audio engineers it’s essential to work with lossless formats when working with sound.

Lossy formats (MP3 & M4A)

Always avoid these file types until you are ready to bounce/export your final project. Due to their high degree of compression and reduced dynamic range, these file types are unfavourable in the process of mixing and mastering audio.
