I'm delighted to share my finished portrait of Larry, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office - one of the most recognisable residents of Downing Street.

Larry arrived at No.10 on 15 February 2011, having been recruited from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for his mousing skills. He was the first cat at No. 10 to be given the official title of Chief Mouser, and over the years he has become something of a national institution: greeting dignitaries, inspecting the premises and, naturally, contemplating the ongoing mouse situation.

This portrait was commissioned as a celebration of Larry, and my client wanted to give it a suitable British character. The Union Jack silk bow tie was a specific addition requested for the portrait - and, as I didn't have quite the right one to hand, it became one of those little details I had to improvise and create myself.

Behind Larry, I've included a subtle nod to his famous home: the black door of No. 10 Downing Street, instantly recognisable even without spelling it out.

I've thoroughly enjoyed painting this rather distinguished gentleman. There's something wonderfully fitting about a cat who has witnessed so much political history simply sitting calmly at the centre of it all, looking as though he owns the place.
