✨ New Release – British Wildlife Collection ✨

There’s something truly special about the quiet alertness of the hare… always listening, always poised between stillness and flight.

I’m excited to share my latest original oil painting, capturing that fleeting moment of awareness and calm. Every detail—from the soft texture of the fur to the warmth in the eye—has been carefully built in layers to bring this beautiful creature to life.

Hello you lovely people. I've been having a little break from social media as I was getting a little demoralised with continually feeling as though I were 'swimming upstream'. Anyway I'm having a renewed mindset and just wish to keep posting my work here, without hope or agenda, for those that enjoy and appreciate it. Thank you for sticking with me.

“Focus”

That moment of absolute stillness… when instinct takes over and nothing else exists.

This striking fox, with its intense gaze, is captured from my original oil painting and released as a limited edition framed canvas print (18.5" x 18.5"). Part of my British Wildlife Collection.

As a realist oil painter, I spend most of my days chasing light, detail, and atmosphere — whether that’s in the intensity of a wildlife portrait or the drama of a chiaroscuro still life.

But there’s a tension I don’t think we talk about enough as artists…

When your art becomes your primary income, how do you balance creative instinct with commercial reality?

Do you follow the pull to paint whatever excites you — knowing that’s where your best work comes from?

Or do you lean toward subjects and compositions that you know will resonate more widely… and translate well into limited edition prints?

Because the truth is, those two paths don’t always align.

Some of the pieces I feel most connected to aren’t necessarily the ones that are easiest to reproduce or most “marketable.”
And yet, sustainability as a full-time artist depends on creating work that people want to live with, collect, and invest in.

It’s a constant negotiation:

Artistic freedom vs audience demand
Expression vs reproduction
Passion vs practicality

I’d love to hear from others — artists, collectors, and creatives alike:

How do you navigate this balance between creating what you love and creating what sells?

Just wanted to post a close up of Martha as it's really one of those portraits where you need to get close to the eyes to feel the personality behind them and as phones reduce the image size so dramatically anyway, I think it's hard to get a true sense of her from the full shot.

Just wanted to share Martha's portrait in its frame. I also wanted to thank everyone who has liked and/or commented on this piece. I'm hugely grateful as I'm really struggling to get any of my work seen on here currently. 💕

The beautiful Martha. This portrait was gifted today for a very special birthday. Martha has been through the mill, having fought cancer once and may now be facing it for a second time so my thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

I lost track of the number of golds I mixed for this portrait... the subtle tone shifts in her coat were such a challenge to replicate but, as ever, I felt I learned so much through the process. I definitely got my steps in walking back and forth between the easel and my furthest viewing spot , trying to make sure my colour values were all working together.

I'd be so grateful for any comments, shares or reposts for this piece as I'm continually battling these pesky algorithms, which makes it so challenging to get my work seen. Thank you all so much for your support, it really does mean so much. 😊
