Builder’s break” done with my left hand as I had a right shoulder op so could be better.
Memory of my younger days working on building sites. The “Nipper” (youngest lad) would make the tea in a large kettle over a fire of wood and shavings. The lids always went missing so a few slivers of wood were placed in the kettle, floating on top keeping the smoke away from the water. Milk bottles were used to drink the tea having being cleaned with water and stoney sand. No canteen just any empty room would do.

"Hope he doesn't ask me - Confirmation day". As the bishop made his way down the church we all knew that those who could give the right answer were always placed on the outside of the pew. As I was third in I felt relatively secure I would not be asked but you never could tell.....
Painting this, I found myself feeling somewhat sad as I wondered how many of those girls would end up in mother and child homes. I felt I wanted to protect them.
The "slap on the cheek" was awaited and I remember wondering how we didn't all jump up like the apostles speaking in tongues.
Once the ceremony was over the rest of the day was spent collecting money from your relations and neighbours and keeping your suit on for as long as possible on the special day.

"Newtown Cove, Co. Waterford". My wife, who is from Waterford, used to regularly go to the various bays in her younger days - Bunmahon, Ballymacaw, Ardmore, Dunmore, Tramore and the Metal Man but her favourite was Newtown Cove. We always try to have a swim with her relations whenever we go across. This painting is from a photo by Sinead Boyle.
