Carters Steam Fair no longer tours the UK and all rides have been sold to new owners. Fairground owner Joby Carter, a leading expert in fairground art and signwriting has relocated to Somerset where he is establishing the home of traditional signwriting at his workshop in Street. He hosts free public open days and a range of paid courses to teach the traditional skills of signwriting, lining and c

oach lining and coach painting. (Find out more via jobycarter.com)

Carters Steam Fair was a unique experience and this page still exists for occasional updates about traditional fairground art and to keep the lovely memories alive. We were the largest travelling vintage funfair in the world, patronised by the public, celebrities and royalty and well loved by local communities in the towns we visited on tour, particularly our home town of Maidenhead.

Today myself (Joby) and Georgina called in on the Hyman’s at the Black Country Living Museum. We felt as proud as punch to see particularly the gallopers looking resplendent in the sun. Running on Steam having had a clever conversion to a kerosene heater. The organ sounding fantastic. Plus new dragon style sides to the chariots. Best of all the outside horses have now finally got tails! Needless to say all the equipment looked top notch. Many of the attractions were formally toured with our fair. Plus many more they have added also. Including a great build up ghost train and a lovely collection of vintage machines in the arcade. If you were a fan of the fair please do go and visit. There is a big chunk of our old amusements in one place. Really being cared for so I couldn’t be happier.
Also it’s an incredible museum, many scenes from Peaky blinders were filmed at the Canal yard, if such things float your boat (canal boat that is! 🤪) Plus the fish and chips are legendary.
Do go and pay a visit.

My Scammell Highwayman and Brayshaw living wagon being carefully manoeuvered by Rock ‘n’ Roll Kev. It’s possible the rear number plate on the wagon blew off just prior to this video? 🥴. Luckily it was only going from White Waltham to Pinkneys green where the Hortons have their now annual Steam Fair. Picking up where Carters steam fair left off in 2022. Though unable to attend myself, I was sure to send vehicles along to make up the show. Nothing at all to do with the fact they are both for sale of course 🤪. Also note they have a road run on the Saturday morning including this Scammell and 2 Showtracs, 2 steam engines and much more.
