Y bore ‘ma clywais i…
This morning I heard…

…a song thrush singing in an oak for over half an hour straight, from my dawn-den amongst unfurling new, green-glowing hawthorn leaves… the relentless hope of skylark as it flew low over the hill, over earth’s ice jewels which sparkled in the corners of my eye… the barks of dog and pheasant in broken conversation… a distant woodpecker drumming in the day, railway percussion of the first trains…

What did you hear this morning?
Beth glywsoch chi'r bore 'ma?

Helo Pawb!

Dyma recordiad y gweithdy 'Rhoi Sain ar Bapur' gyda Penny Tristram, fel rhan o prosiect 'Mapio Sain Ein Pum Milltir Sgwâr'.

Here is a recording of the workshop Penny Tristram and I did back in the Autumn, called 'Putting Sound on Paper', as part of 'Soundmapping Our 5 Square Miles'.

///

Yn y gweithdy hwn, mi fydd yr artist weledol Penny Tristam ac Ailsa Mair Hughes yn rhannu eu syniadau ar sut i gyfieithu y synau rydym yn clywed yn ein hamgylchedd lleol mewn i farciau a geiriau ar bapur. Yna mi fydd gennych yr offer i wneud eich mapiau sain eich hun yn eich anturiaethau personol yn y lle rydych chi'n ei alw'n gartref. Medrwch hela rhein i Ailsa I helpu ysbrydoli darn adrodd straeon cerddorol newydd.

Anfonwch eich lluniau i: [email protected] cyn y dechrau mis Mawrth.

It covers loads of ways of translating sound into marks on the page, and I hope that it might inspire you to take (further) part in 'Soundmapping Our 5 Square Miles'.

No artistic expertise required, just get something to draw with and something to draw on!

If you want your drawings to become part of the co-creative soundmap and the piece I am currently creating for the end of March, then please send them here before the end of this month:

Taith Gerdded Sain / Sound Walk

On Wednesday morning the dawn birds tempted me irresistibly for an early morning walk up the hill from our house in Machynlleth, pulling my coat over my dressing gown to record these beautiful sounds...

Make your own! Either by recording your own short dawn (or other-time) walk if you have the means, or simply *really* listening as you go, and journalling what you heard/what came to you when you get home.

Head to the Wild Notes BLOG to find other ways of Soundmapping your 5 Square Miles - your contributions will help inspire a new piece I am working on, and become part of a co-craetive 'sound-map' of Wales!

beginnings

Seeded in 2019 by musician, storyteller and creative activist Ailsa Mair Hughes, Wild Notes/Nodau Gwyllt is, at its heart, a place for soulful, educative offerings which aim to spark curiosity about wild soundscape and help cultivate a sacred relationship with the Earth.

Gathering expertise & passion from scientists, artists, folklorists activists and all members of the community, together we will begin to listen in new-old ways to the voices of the land and its other-than-human beings. We will, too, explore our own voices, sounding and singing, storytelling and writing from the heart.

Wild Notes Dyfi will organise activities in the Dyfi Valley area that include soundwalks and soundmappings, voice play workshops, storytelling&musical performance, eco-art, meditative practice and seasonal ceremonies and will aim to reconnect people to the sacred celebration of our shared lives on this planet.

Wild Notes will form its own kind of ‘creative activism’ which roots firmly in a sacred celebration of Earth and connection with the local landscape, enquiring into issues such as noise pollution and how the wild soundscape may be affected by climate change, as well as reclaiming the place of our own voices in this soundscape.
