Time and Tide Bells

Time and Tide Bells Time & Tide Bell is an art project made up of bells, designed by sculptor Marcus Vergette, installed at coastal locations in the UK.

Each bell rings at high tide, and rising sea levels caused by global warming will change the sounds made by the bells.

🌊 Memories of Morecambe's Coast 🌊

Have you explored our Coastal Connections map yet?

As part of a Time & Tide Bell and National Lottery Heritage Fund project, local people shared their memories, stories and reflections about life on the Morecambe coast—past and present. From childhood adventures and family traditions to memories of work, weather and changing landscapes, these voices help tell the story of our coastline.

🗺️ Take a virtual journey along the coast and listen to the memories connected to different locations around Morecambe.

Or, if you're visiting, follow the physical trail and scan the QR codes along the route to hear the stories where they happened.

🔔 PAR TIME AND TIDE BELL 🔔

With thanks to

Moved by the tides themselves, the bell rings with the changing moods of the water, reminding us of our connection to the coast and the reality of rising sea levels.

Beautiful, haunting and completely unique every day. If you’re visiting Par Beach, take a moment to stop and listen. 💙

🌊🔔 Have you visited the Mablethorpe Time and Tide Bell?

Installed on the beach at North End, our remarkable sculpture by Marcus Vergette rings naturally with the movement of the tide — a beautiful and haunting reminder of our changing coastline and rising sea levels.

The Mablethorpe bell is unique within the UK’s Time and Tide Bell network, standing directly on the sandy beach where visitors can hear the sea itself play the bell at high tide.

Worth a walk along the shore if you’re in the area. Listen carefully… the sea does the ringing. 🌊

Step into a world of texture, atmosphere, and quiet intensity with the latest exhibition by Marcus Vergette creator of Time and Tide Bell sculptures and Simon Marsh at Standpoint Gallery.

Working across sculpture, sound, painting and glass, their work reflects on light and sound as energy—waves that move through space, carrying meaning, memory and emotion.

🔔 Vergette’s sculptural bells—some ringing, some silent—draw on deep histories of communication, authority and ritual, while speaking urgently to today’s environmental concerns.

🎨 Marsh’s layered paintings and constructions respond to the shifting light and textures of West Cornwall, combining drawing, print and glass to create fragile, luminous works that echo landscape and time.

Having first met in 1980 at Central School of Art & Design, this exhibition brings together decades of shared history and evolving practice.

⚠️ Please note:
The gallery is closed Good Friday (5 April) and Saturday (6 April), but open Thursday 4 April.
