Harbour and Heather

Harbour and Heather Prints and Patterns inspired by coastal life in the Scottish Highlands. Available on homeware, giftware and Stationary. Seaglass • Sketches • Digital

Harbour and Heather is my creative outlet - born from quiet moments and late nights as a mum of 2 young children often creating while nursing or to find calm in the chaos. Inspired by life in the Scottish Highlands, where rugged coastlines meet wild heather hills, my work spans from seaglass crafts to hand drawn sketches and digital art. Each piece carries a little of the beauty, and love I find

in family life here. What began as a way to nurture creativity has become something more, a growing dream to share my art and the connection I find in the highlands with others. So thank you for being here and supporting this little dream, it means more than words can say.

Floriography Friday! 🌱

This week, I chose Yarrow, a native British wildflower with historical connection to this weekends summer solstice.

Yarrow is a symbol of healing, protection, and everlasting love. ❤️ A native UK wildflower it used to be nicknamed soldiers' woundwort as it can be used to help stop bleeding from wounds and scrapes! In fact, its Latin name Achillea comes from the Greek hero Achilles, who is said to have used it to treat his soldiers' battle wounds.

In gaelic folklore, women recited incantations whilst picking Yarrow for protection. It was then hung over a child's cradle or scattered around houses to ward off spirits, witches, and fairies!

A versatile plant its uses are many from applying it in a salve to irratated skin to drinking it in tea to aid digestion and reduce cramps. ☕️

Apparently, it reaches its peak potency during the summer solstice, making this weekend the best time to pick some if you fancy giving one of it’s many uses a try. 🌞

A lovely little trip over to Thurso yesterday to drop off my cushions and sign to Haven for Part 2 of the Carnival of Plants exhibition 🌱🌼

This part of the exhibition includes work from the sidhc_art rising artists alongside pieces by local school children, so make sure to pop in for plenty of plant-inspired creativity.

While I was there, I picked up some rainbow carrots from Thehiddenlanethurso , took the kids to soft play at ThursoCommunityCafe, picked up my jam order from Caithness Summer Fruits and stopped by JA Mackay to stock the B&B up with Scottish cheeses before making it to Loaf - Peat Bog Baker just in time to grab their amazing sourdough … plus a couple of cinnamon buns 😍

A productive trip I'd say!

I love supporting small independent businesses, and Thurso has such a brilliant selection of shops and cafés ❤️

Floriography Friday!

How is it Friday already? I definitely intended to post a few bits of product content this week, but this crazy beautiful life continues to keep me juggling! Maybe next week...

In the meantime, here is one of my favourites in terms of symbolism. Rosebay Willowherb, also known as fireweed or bombweed. This plant symbolises resilience and rebirth due to its ability to thrive in fire damaged and polluted environments.

It gained the nick name bombweed during World War 2 after it rapidly spread across bomb-damaged sites, replacing the site of scorched earth and destruction with its bright pink blooms.

A brilliant pollinator, it's also edible and makes a great caffeine free tea traditionally known as Ivan Chai. Having tried rosebaywillowherb tea, thanks to the lovely , I can confirm it's lovely!

Though superstition says that picking this plant will lead to thunderstorms, so if you fancy a brew, maybe don't pick too much! 😀

Floriography Friday… can this be a thing? 🌿

Floriography is the “language of flowers,” dating back to Victorian times when flowers were used to communicate coded messages during an era ruled by strict etiquette.

That said, people have attached meanings, myths, and symbolism to flowers for thousands of years, so many of the meanings we associate with flowers today actually originate in ancient folklore and mythology.

The spear thistle above is one of the plants depicted in my Strength in Bloom pattern, representing bravery and protection. It’s widely celebrated as the national emblem of Scotland, and folklore tells us the thistle once saved Scotland when a Norse invader stepped on one and cried out loudly enough to alert the defending clans.

That’s the written version, anyway… but growing up, I remember hearing a slightly different telling of the story — that the Norse invaders attempted to come ashore through a field of thistles, only to become so scared of the idea of facing a people who willingly lived amongst such prickly plants that they turned and fled 🤣 - I have to admit, I like that version better!

After my first wonky attempt at a reveal here is attempt 2, this time squeezed in before a nursery run, photo bombed by the dog and yes that is a chicken behind me 🤣😊 still... ta da!

This A0 sign was custom printed onto Dibond Aluminium and is destined for a woodland home, where hopefully the meaning woven through the artwork will speak to passers by and maybe, for someone who really needs it, it will be a reminder that even in difficult seasons there is growth, support and hope to be found. 🌱🌸🐝🦋

A closer look at the symbolism hidden within the Strength in Bloom collection 🌿🐝

Every flower, insect and detail within the artwork was chosen to reflect themes of resilience, recovery, nourishment and hope.

💜 Lavender for calmness and emotional wellbeing
🌾 Oats symbolising nourishment, sustenance and resilience
🦋 The Small Blue Butterfly representing transformation, growth and recovery
🌸 Rosebay Willowherb (fireweed) symbolising regeneration and hope after destruction
🌿 Spear Thistle representing bravery, protection and defiance
🌼 Common Rock Rose symbolising strength and endurance
🐾 Hidden paw prints inspired by Harvey, Caitlin’s rescue dog from Ukraine, representing companionship, comfort and love
🐝 Bees throughout the design symbolising persistence and the manifestation of dreams through endurance

One of my favourite things about this project has been all the hidden meaning 💛

Unpackaging my biggest artwork yet ahead of this weekend’s Carnival of Plants 🌲🌳

I tried to do one of those cute artwork reveal videos you always see online but… I live in the Highlands, the artwork arrived at the 9th hour (cheers DPD 🙃), and I was rushing between a nursery run and dropping the piece off late 🤣

So here’s my slightly wonky effort!

If you want to see it in person, you can catch it this weekend at the Carnival of Plants at Forse of Nature before it heads off to its forever home 🌿
