Dolly Parton grew up in a poor farming family. Not only did she celebrate her farming roots, she also returned to her childhood home to purchase and restore it - keeping the farm in her families name.
Dolly often spoke to farming communities across the world and knew well the love inspired by working on the land.

Come inside the walls for a delicious treat alongside tea and coffee — the perfect excuse to linger a little longer. (And lunch options are also available at the Woodyard Brasserie - booking reccommended)
Don’t forget the Garden Shop
There’ll be fresh produce grown right here in the garden, giving you the chance to take a little piece of the Walled Garden home with you.

Yes, we have been experiencing a very dry, very hot summer, but there is still colour and life in the garden, not to mention beautiful and delicious produce in the shop, fascinating information on the tour, friendly faces from the volunteer project and shade under the trees (and tea/coffee and something delicious available inside the garden walls with lunch options available at the Woodyard Brasserie). Pop by and take some time out in the wonderful Walled Garden.
We are open from 10.30 and there is no need to pre book - £7.50 per person for all day entry and RHS and Historic Houses entry is free for card holders*

How quickly does a fire take hold? The answer is shocking in these tinder box conditions. Luckily an observant eye spotted a fire in the field on the estate. Farmers worked alongside Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue to quickly bring it under control and extinguish. Thankfully, damage was limited and the last picture shows the clean up as it is now. We thank members of the public for calling it in, and the quick work of everyone involved in putting it out. ** if you see a fire do not assume somebody else has reported it - call the fire service with the details **

rich history of this remarkable garden while exploring its ever-changing borders, service buildings and historic features.

The garden is constantly evolving and, like gardens everywhere, has responded to this year's extreme weather, making every visit a little different.

Be sure to visit the Garden Shop for the produce of the day, including fresh soft fruit picked from the garden. There are plenty of shady spots to relax and enjoy
delicious hot and cold drinks and light snacks available within the garden walls. If you're planning to make a day of it, why not book lunch at the Woodyard

Don't miss the magnificent Prop Houses, home to our impressive collection of melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, pelargoniums and cacti, or wander through the Vinery to see gourds growing before your eyes.

A Rare Friday Opening at the Walled Garden!

This Friday, we’re delighted to be opening the Walled Garden for a very special National Garden Scheme (NGS) Open Day – and it’s a rare opportunity, as the garden is not usually open on Fridays!

By visiting, you’ll not only enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the garden, but you’ll also be supporting an incredible cause. Since 1927, the National Garden Scheme has donated almost £78 million to nursing, health and garden charities, including organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and Parkinson’s UK. In 2025 alone, the NGS donated over £3.8 million to its beneficiary charities, helping thousands of people across the UK.

The last of the 2026 harvest came off the field late last night. The yard finally fell quiet in the small hours, as combines were parked, trailers emptied for the last time, and another British summer’s work drew to its close.
Months of early mornings, late nights, broken machinery, changing weather, careful judgement and unwavering determination have brought another harvest safely home.
There is something timeless about this moment. Harvest reminds us that each generation has celebrated this time of year in their own way.
Today we thank everyone involved in our successful harvest - Farmer Sid, Clive, Pat, Lottie, Amelia, Bradley, Neil, Edward and William. From the combine mechanics to the haulage companies, the agronomists to the seed supplier. It’s a wrap! Another harvest complete. The work is done … for now!
