Music on Mondays. Our next concert is on 8th June and takes place in beautiful St Mary's Church, Luton. 7.30pm. Doors open from 7pm. £18 with under 18s in full-time education - free admittance.

Sarajevo-born pianist Ivana Gavrić makes a welcome return to Luton with a fascinating programme. On her last visit she offered us perfect miniatures from the Bedford-based composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, and now she features two other remarkable female composers. Dora Pejačević is an increasingly admired Croatian composer, writing in a late Romantic idiom in the early years of the 20th Century; Cécile Chaminade was an internationally feted pianist and composer from the second half of the 19th Century – she was a particular favourite at the court of England’s Queen Victoria and her Prélude for Organ was played at that great monarch’s funeral in 1901. This will perhaps be a chance to hear less well known repertoire alongside the more familiar masterpieces by Grieg and Ravel that complete this dazzling programme.

Concert. Simon Callaghan and Ben Goldscheider.

What a treat last night to attend a concert in St Mary's without wearing my winter layers! It was the perfect temperature for me. Of course, the overriding treat was hearing (and watching) such accomplished and internationally recognised artists as Simon Callaghan and Ben Goldscheider. Although previously, I have enjoyed the sound of French horns in symphony orchestras and in small ensembles I don't think I have heard the combination of a piano with a French horn, so this was of particular interest to me. Both Ben and Simon showed their musical mastery during the opening music, Bax's Horn Sonata, and in particular, Simon's fingers were just a blur for much of the time. No wonder he followed it with a less technically demanding piece, although very charming, George Dyson's My Birthday. There were no cds for sale afterwards but if you would like to hear again Huw Watkins' Lament played this time with the composer at the piano then go to https://www.bengoldscheider.com/blog/day-sixteen-huw-watkins-lament. The lengthy and hearty applause at the end of the concert might have encouraged an encore but sadly not. However, it was a pleasure to drive home before it was actually dark.

St Mary's Church is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building that is almost 900 years old. It is spacious with plenty of comfortable seating. The concert will start at 7.30pm but many people arrive soon after 7pm when the doors open. An adult ticket costs £18 but under 18s in F/T education get free admission. The concert will finish around 9.30pm.

What a thoroughly enjoyable evening we had on Monday 13th listening to the slightly unusual combination of viola, violin and piano. The hearly applause at the end was well deserved.
Our next concert is on Monday 27th April and will feature clarinettist Sarah Williamson and the Piatti String Quartet playing music by Finzi, Weber and Brahms. The concert will start at 7.30pm and the doors will be open from 7pm.

Last Monday's concert was an excellent start to our 2026 season. Not only was our new high calibre Bechstein grand piano in situ but we also had in Leon McCawley one of the finest concert pianists in Britain to 'baptise' it. This combination was a very appropriate way to celebrate our 80th anniversary year.

Only a few weeks now until the start of our 2026 season of 20 concerts under the umbrella name of Music on Mondays. Despite the name, the first one will be held on Thursday 19th March and will be hosted by the renown BBC Radio 3 and Proms presenter Petroc Trelawny who just happens to also be the President of Luton Music Club. Luton Music Club began in 1946 so this year we are celebrating our 80th year of providing musical excellence to residents in Luton and the surrounding towns and villages. Our first concert will be partly a social event and Petroc will interview composer and BBC presenter Michael Berkeley before a short performance from two young musicians, clarinettist Reynold Yang and pianist Ruigi Fang. The second half of the evening will be a lighthearted music quiz. It should be an enjoyable and fun evening amongst a friendly audience. MUSIC ON MONDAYS
Luton Music celebrates its 80th anniversary during 2026 with a season of 20 fortnightly concerts between March and December. All concerts will take place in St Mary's Church, Luton and start at 7.30pm with doors open from 7pm. Unusually the first concert on March 19th will be held on a Thursday but the remaining 19 concerts will always take place on Mondays.

March 19th.
We open our 80th anniversary season with an unusual social event. Hosted by our loyal President, Radio 3’s Petroc Trelawny, the evening will be a particular chance to enjoy the company of other members of our audience.

After a short introductory history of the club, Petroc will interview one of our distinguished vice-presidents, the composer Michael Berkeley. He will be invited to reminisce about his own associations with the club over so many years and perhaps those too of his father Sir Lennox Berkeley. Leading into the interval there will be a short performance by two of the talented young musicians who are to appear later in the season, clarinettist Reynold Yang and pianist Ruiqi Fang.

After refreshments, the second half of the evening is devoted to a music quiz led by Petroc. It will in part be based on the content of his new best-selling book, Petroc Trelawny’s Classical Music Puzzle Book; there will also be questions on the cultural life of Luton and in particular the recent history of Luton Music. The quiz is to be organised in teams and there may be prizes!

The event will be held in the Church Hall at St Mary’s Church, Luton LU1 3JF.
