Around 3 years healed.

Fresh tattoos are only the beginning. The real test is how a tattoo settles into the skin and holds up over time.

This underwater sleeve is a good example of why I love working on larger-scale pieces — seeing them years later and knowing the work has continued to age well.

Second sitting on a Zeus sleeve.

After reviewing the healed work, we made a few final decisions, including adding subtle background clouds.

This session focused on building contrast, refining the detail and bringing Zeus to life.

One year healed 🦁

A full front lion piece, completed over a year ago and still looking strong.

One of the best parts of large black & grey work is seeing how it settles over time — the contrast, detail and depth are still there after 12 months.

This bulldog was originally tattooed by my Dad, Alan over 30 years ago. Over time, the tattoo had naturally softened, but the meaning behind it never left.

Rather than replacing it, the decision was made to rebuild it properly — restoring structure, improving clarity, and staying true to what was already there.

Being trusted with something that connects directly to my own family’s work made this one particularly meaningful.

As we come to the end of our 40th anniversary celebrations, it felt fitting to finish by sharing some recent work – a pair of custom leg sleeves inspired by Star Wars and Back to the Future.

From a small upstairs room in 1986, through the move to our current location in 1987, and now into a second generation of tattooing, it’s been an incredible journey.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the studio over the years. To every client who has trusted us with their tattoo, recommended us to friends and family, or returned time and time again – thank you.

A lot has changed in tattooing over the last four decades, but our focus has remained the same: creating quality custom tattoos and treating every client properly.

40 years later, we’re still doing what we love.

I’ve spent more than 20 years helping people turn ideas into tattoos they’ll be proud to wear for life.

I’m currently booking autumn appointments from September onwards and I’m looking to take on a few more larger custom projects.

Alan’s Tattoo Studio turns 40 this year.

One of the best parts of that is seeing people come back over decades — and in some cases, tattooing the next generation as well.

John first came to the studio in 1987, and over the years both Alan and I have tattooed him, including the full front piece shown here that I completed in 2012, 10 years after starting tattooing myself.

I’m still adding to John’s tattoos now, while also tattooing his son — including adding to and working around pieces Alan started before retiring in 2020.

I grew up around the studio and took over running it after Alan retired in 2020.

A lot has changed since 1986, but the focus on doing solid, custom work properly hasn’t.

Thanks to everyone who’s supported the studio over the years.

Japanese backpiece completed by Richard on last year at Alan’s Tattoo Studio in Luton.

Large scale Japanese tattooing has been part of the studio for decades, with a strong focus on flow, composition and how the work sits on the body over time.

This piece progressed from stencil through outline, black and grey and finally full colour over multiple sessions.
