Moneypenny's Blacksmiths Workshop Moneypenny's Blacksmith Workshop is a come and try workshop based at Moneypenny's Lock on the Newry Canal outside Portadown.

It is funded by Heritage Lottery and Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon Borough Council. Moneypenny's Blacksmiths Workshop is a blacksmithing and creative metalwork class run every Saturday at the historic and scenic Moneypenny's Lock on the Newry Canal outside Portadown. Our basic aim is to celebrate the ancient craft of blacksmithing and place it alongside modern metal fabrication techniques in a creative and inclusive way.

The men from the REACT group using a cast iron gear wheel to forge a long curve into 20mm round bar. This way they can create several identical curves. Great to see the men all working together, with another 2 responsible for heating the long heavy bar unseen in the background.

Father & son showing off the axes they made here at Moneypenny's Forge. Dave & Steven are regular visitors to the forge, and worked hard on these for several weeks. The axes are mild steel wrapped round a spring steel high carbon core. Well done !

For many years, Moneypenny's Blacksmith Workshop's motto was 'We Don't Shoe Horses'. Well, this is the closest I have come yet to shoeing a horse ! :-) This one is to be lined with a flammable rope and set aflame. Macha should look good with a fiery mane !
