A very warm welcome to Kevin Andrew Morris Kevin Andrew Morris our new potter-in-residence, joining us all the way from Aberdeenshire.

Kevin spent some weekend time sorting an outdoor salt glaze firing prep for our annual Social Clay festival (Sept. 18 & 19) - and he will also be teaching pottery for all skill levels in our workshop this autumn.

Social Clay is a friendly jamboree for anyone interested in clay and pottery - professional or not! We have talks, food, workshops and everything in between - and you can buy a ticket that includes our onsite camping or just buy a day entry.

Join us for an early autumn day in our lovely fields, with master hedge layer Phil Atkinson!

We will learn all the important traditional techniques for renewing hedgerows with the ancient craft of hedge laying, bringing back vigour and wildlife habitat to older or outgrown native hedges.

Tools and tea and cake are provided, and this is a hands on workshop, so we will work together on a section of hedge using skills you can take away and apply in your own garden.

SO MANY GOOD THINGS.

Hazel rescues bats. So naturally she has one with her. Perhaps our first ever bat guest. It’s a boy pipistrelle BTW.

Then Edward and Kester (and Pip 🐕) installing 4 beautiful bespoke benches in our community orchard, Diana’s Orchard. Come and try them, they’re so comfy.

Not a great pic but the rejuvenated Ungarden looks amazing despite last weeks heatwave. Gorgeous reseda and echium especially and lots of germinating hollyhocks for next year’s bonanza.

Now here’s a surprise - self seeded celery in the Beer Garden! TONS of it, all in dry hot cracks in the paving. Who knew.

Lovely little mallow, also near the Beer Garden growing in sweet FA.

Our loveliest mature tree - our weeping larch (I think!) beside the Bar door - couldn’t care less about the heatwave and just a lovely cool, green shady thing to walk under and look up through on your way to your room.

Nice wee sedum at the foot of a wall - might be edible? Lovely to see tho.

GRAPES! Growing outside in the Beer Garden. May need to fight the birds off for them tho.

Lastly a splendid lettuce in our veg plot - variety is ‘Cocarde’ as trialled and chosen as the GOAT by Head of Veg Matt in 2023.

Bar staff needed £20 per hour
for interesting events, weddings and arts festivals.

We are looking for up to 4 people to run our fantastic bar at The Farmers Arms on an occasional basis mainly arts related events, weddings and small festivals.

Our events run all year round and we need a team of up to 4 people to manage the calendar of events between them.
This would involve staffing the bar, setting up, cashing up and cleaning down at the end of the day.
The events generally run over weekends, during the day and evening.
The hourly rate will be £20, due to the adhoc nature of the hours.

We are looking for those with a passion for the arts and community, have fantastic customer service and enjoying working at events.

Wanted Youth Worker with Marketing Skills.
Grizedale arts is looking for an experienced Youth Worker to support and work with our fantastic ‘CafeTeen’ staff - a team of 13-16 year olds running the Cafe at The Farmers Arms, Lowick Green LA128DT.

Cafe Teen aims to support creativity with a purpose, helping young people think creativly about how they do things and how that creative process will enhance the work they are involved in, whatever that may be.

Alongside learning about working in the service industry, the post will develop arts projects making use of the Farerms arms pottery and woodworkshops, gardens and art collections. A key part of the role is to creativly market the cafe, bringing in more customers and assisting the group to hit targets and benifit from the profit sharing scheme.

Sorry to say we are not open this evening or Saturday - possibly not next weekend either but should you need your sausage rolls or cheesecake both are available at Vend 24/7 shop in the Farmer’s car park - Cafeteen will be open tomorrow from 12 till 4 and with their usual mix of brunch and cakes and Lawson Park has its open house and gardens both Saturday and Sunday 11 till 5 with light lunches and cakes - And don’t forget we are celebrating meadows day next weekend with all sorts of things happening starting with a Moth breakfast - that’s looking at moths caught the previous night Grizedale Arts .gardens

Vend shop 24/7 fully stocked with cakes. Sausage rolls and apple juice from the valley - also our truly delicious apple cider vinegar - made in the fermentation barn at the farmers market- now aged 2 years and full of complex flavour, a bargain at £4.50 a litre.
The vending machine is available to anyone who wants to sell frozen produce (it can also just refrigerate) drop by on a Saturday to get set up for selling. Project funded by The Royal Countryside Fund

Grey sky today but still SO MUCH GOING ON IN OUR GARDENS!
Gorgeous rambler rose on our workshop (variety unknown but could be ‘Chevy Chase’), a white deutzia by the Japanese fermentation barn chock full of bumble bees, an Angelica with more heads than we’ve ever seen - and in its 3rd year from seed too, our rejuvenated car park Ungarden (2 soil-less beds of pure slate and pure limestone gravel, sown with seed in 2023 and again this May) with thanks to in for the great edging, and a beautiful thornless blackberry ‘Oachita’ we have trained by the workshop door for easy snacking 😍.

When we invited Moth Guru Rob Pickett to our open weekend at Lawson Park last June, we had no idea how excited we would get about MOTHS 🤩.
I mean, there are circa 2500 kinds in the UK, compared to a mere 60 butterflies and naturally they’re an indicator of a richly biodiverse landscape!

So we have invited Rob back and this time to our fields and gardens at The Farmer’s Arms where he will leave out his amazing moth traps for the night before our very special morning event on Saturday, July 4 for - this is just one of a host of special events we are doing, including a Scythe Weekender and a Making a Meadow Workshop.

Then over a tasty al fresco breakfast freshly made in our kitchens (incl.
in the ticket price) Rob will guide us through all the incredible moth varieties that he will have caught that evening. And don’t worry, the traps are humane and all moths are gently re released after studying and ID’ing them.

Expect some common beauties and probably some rarities too - at Lawson Park Rob identified no fewer than 114 individual species of moths in one night!

You might have heard of some of them - for example the elephant hawk moth - but there will be others that may be new to you. The names are just one of the lovely things about them - who doesn’t want to spot the Smoky Wainscott or even the Small Fan Foot?!
