It's been crazily busy, but the videos for the "People's History" project are now finished - and we are grateful to interviewees and also those who provided memorabilia. Apologies to anyone who has slipped through the net - we're still keen to hear from you!

He's a Gorleston figure, but there was so much interest in him that he got the nod!
Please check out the other 3 videos - they are being uploaded today.

A FREE all-day (well, 10:30-3:30) session on oral history interviewing with an expert from the Oral History Society is coming soon! It will offer an insight into the value of recording memories together with some practical advice and techniques to get the most out of interviewing someone.
Refreshments and a light lunch (also both free!) will be provided. The session takes place upstairs in Gorleston library on Tuesday 4th November. We only have limited places, so do please message the page or [email protected]

Blown away by how much knowledge there was at today's History Fair...and just how NICE people are! This week's drop-in session is at Great Yarmouth library on Tuesday 16th, 1:30-4:30. Refreshments provided (I'll be bringing some different goodies to tempt you!)

Please spread the word as we want to decide on (for now) two areas of the town that are under-represented/under-mentioned/ under-valued and connect visual material with oral history memories.

A lovely piece in the Great Yarmouth Mercury about our project - thanks so much!

A lovely little banner to promote the History Fair.
I'll be there, and will have information plus some books for sale - 'Celebrate Gorleston!' plus my book of short stories plus some original Kellys Directories for the town from the 1960s!
Really looking forward to being back at the Minster!

All September dates now confirmed - hope to see you there!
The aim is to initially decide on 2 areas of the town's history that have been overlooked or that have stories to tell. Then, as well as using visual material we will try to link up with people who have memories of those areas. Examples could be:

Fuller's Hill
The Regal (later the ABC and then the Cannon and now sadly gone)
A specific shop - such as Arnolds or Debenhams

Any ideas and suggestions for focus areas welcome!

What IS 'The People's History'?
It's a democratic forum where people can come to talk about Great Yarmouth's past and suggest areas that haven't been fully documented or explored before. Then, we'll gather some visual material and get some oral history interviews to go with them.

It's been a quiet time of late while we've been shaping a funding bid...but we were successful! We're grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the National Lottery players for believing in our idea.

'Great Yarmouth - The People's History' launches right NOW...and we need you!

We're looking for cine film, photographs and memorabilia from the local area. It might be something like this lovely photo or something much more recent. We're also looking for people who would like to be trained to interview others about their memories.

The first workshop will be held in Room 4 at The Place (Room 4 is the furthest one in on your left) between 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday 10th July. Refreshments will be provided. No need to book - just turn up!
