There’s a graveyard at the top of St James’ Church in Louth… and the culprit is the fastest animal on Earth. Capable of exceeding 200mph in a hunting dive, they leave plenty of evidence behind, particularly if you’re a Louth pigeon.

Five centuries after medieval craftsmen completed it, St James’ has become an accidental artificial cliff above Louth.

Why is this humble marsh plant called glasswort?

For centuries, coastal communities harvested and burned plants like this to produce soda ash—an essential ingredient that helped make glass before modern chemicals existed. By lowering the melting temperature of silica, it made glassmaking far more practical in pre-industrial furnaces.

The plant became so closely associated with the craft that it earned the name glasswort.

It’s amazing to think that a plant growing quietly on the Lincolnshire marshes played a small but important role in one of humanity’s greatest inventions.

Why are we still fascinated by the Middle Ages?

Every year, thousands of people gather at medieval festivals like Tewkesbury to step back into a world of knights, merchants, monks and craftsmen.

But this isn’t the Middle Ages. It’s medievalism: the way later generations have imagined and recreated the medieval past.

Perhaps we’re drawn to the incredible craftsmanship or simply the romance of castles and tournaments. Or perhaps we’re searching for something we feel we’ve lost in the modern world.

Why is there a tank abandoned on a Lincolnshire beach?

Hidden among the dunes near Saltfleet sits a British Comet tank. Although it looks like a forgotten relic of the Second World War, it most likely arrived here in 1966, when it was taken onto the former RAF Theddlethorpe bombing range and used as an air-to-ground target.

Today it’s slowly disappearing beneath the sand, surrounded by seabirds, wildflowers and one of the quietest stretches of coastline in England, a remarkable reminder of the military history hidden along the Lincolnshire coast.

I had a night terror and broke a window in my sleep. It left me thinking about how nightmares were understood before they were medicalised.

In English folklore, the nightmare was not just a bad dream, but something that came into the room at night. People spoke of being hag-ridden, held down, or visited in sleep by something they could not fully explain.

Today, we understand these experiences differently, but the fear itself feels very old.

This coin is older than Great Britain.

Found while metal detecting on the Lincolnshire marsh, this silver penny of James I dates from a time before Britain existed as a single kingdom.

Its design tells the story - a rose for England and a thistle for Scotland.

After inheriting the English throne in 1603, James VI of Scotland became James I of England, ruling both kingdoms under one monarch for the first time.

The coin even bears the motto Rosa sine spina - “a rose without a thorn”, reflecting James’s vision of a peaceful union between his realms.

Somewhere on the marsh, this penny was lost more than four centuries ago. Today, it offers a small glimpse into the beginnings of modern Britain.

Is the Green Man a pagan or Christian image?

Green Men have appeared in churches since the 13th century, and are often associated with paganism and nature worship. Can they really be linked to a specific pagan god, or is there another explanation? In this video, I explore both interpretations using a Green Man carving from Marshchapel church.

My 'Green Man' print is now available through my new Etsy shop!

This piece was inspired by a medieval Green Man carving at St Mary's Church, Marshchapel, a face formed from leaves, sitting somewhere between folklore, nature and Christian symbolism.

Each one is hand-printed by me from the original linocut, in black ink on textured watercolour paper, mounted and signed. 6x6 inch / 15x15 cm in mount.

For months, I’ve been gathering observations from the Lincolnshire marsh. These became sketches, then linocuts, each inspired by a different piece of history, folklore, or wildlife from the churches, fields, coast, and villages.

Alongside the prints, I made a small zine, bringing together the artworks and the stories behind them. This bank holiday weekend, the collection was exhibited at Marshchapel Arts Festival, where people could finally see the work gathered together in one place.

It has been a really rewarding process, from the first ideas to seeing the finished pieces out in the world.
