Stephen Deer 1952 – 2026
Everyone involved with LostFest was devastated to hear about the death of Stephen Deer last month. As well as his many other accomplishments, Stephen had taken on the role of LostFest co-ordinator for 2026, and was Chair of our committee. Stephen worked tirelessly in this role, putting a huge amount of effort into ensuring that LostFest ran smoothly and was such a success this year.
Stephen was also a good friend to many of the committee, and to others in Lostwithiel of course, and he is very sadly missed. Our sincere condolences go out to Stephen’s family and loved ones, and to all who knew him.
As well as being a personal tragedy, Stephen’s death leaves a big gap in the organisation of LostFest – a free festival that relies entirely on volunteers from the local community. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the first LostFest, and several of the current committee have been closely involved for much of that time and are not getting any younger. While we all appreciate the many people who give up a couple of hours to help each year, there is an enormous amount of work involved in planning throughout the year in the build-up to each festival. LostFest needs new committee members, and a new co-ordinator, to ensure it happens again in 2027 and beyond. You don’t have to know anything about either music or festivals, we just need people with good communication and organisational skills who can get things done. We know that LostFest brings joy to many in the community, and it is also a fun and satisfying thing to be part of - Stephen took great pleasure in playing such an integral part this year.
