Once a DDS dancer, always a DDS dancer!

I was beyond proud to watch former DDS student Tilly Attalia perform in Godspell this week, singing the beautiful song “Day by Day” (amongst others).

Tilly was performing at The Mack Theatre alongside fellow Mountview Master’s students from the Musical Theatre course, and what a performance it was. Every student delivered a polished, professional production that left the audience truly impressed.

Watching Tilly on stage was especially special because this journey began many years ago when, at just 5 years old, she joined Miss Karen’s Baby Ballet class. From those very first steps, strong foundations were built, and Tilly has continued to grow, develop, and go from strength to strength.

Seeing former students achieve their dreams and flourish in the performing arts is one of the greatest rewards of teaching. We couldn’t be prouder of everything Tilly has accomplished and can’t wait to see where her talent and dedication take her next.

Dear friends and fellow dancers,

I know many of you may have already seen this news, but for those who haven’t, it is with great sadness that I share that one of our own, Angela Swinson, passed away on 26th May after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family.

Looking back through our records, Angela has been part of DDS and now IDA for almost 25 years. She first joined the school to complete her Grade 5 Ballet, followed by her Classical 1 and Classical 2 awards. Somewhere along the way, I managed to persuade her to take her teaching exams, and she went on to teach for DDS for several years until Lily was born.

When Lily was old enough, Angela brought her along to Mini Movers and danced beside her, helping her keep in time and teaching her how to point her toes. It is wonderful to think that Lily is now nearly 18, will finish her A-levels in just a few weeks, and is preparing to begin a Musical Theatre degree at Leeds Conservatoire.

This is a very sad time for us all. We have lost a truly kind, supportive lady who simply loved to dance. Angela was a valued part of our dance family for many years, and she will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this difficult time.
