Here’s this weeks recap….
Scroll through these to see:
- a little explanation of mix bus and drum bus compression on a track
- an overview of how I approach automating reverbs, delays and volumes on a vocal
- the puppy. An actual puppy, not the spaniel trying to get my attention!

Here’s my little weekly recap….
Scroll through these little videos to see:
- using sidechain ducking on certain sections to add vibe
- narrowing pads for a simple drop that’s mainly kick and bass, to focus on the core, and then open up as the track builds
- using tape on drums to buy a bit of headroom without clipping, and get a bit of vibe

Getting low end right comes with lots of challenges.
The most important thing is to make a decision on what to prioritise. Once you know what’s sitting in front you can wrap everything else around.
In this track I used Pro Q4, Surfer EQ and stacked side chain compression using Soothe to get the low end of the sub, chords, kick and arpeggio to work with each other.
The result is a clean low end with definition, weight and dynamics.

This is curious. On hearing back the master of this track I noticed some distortion on the kick.
Turns out it was a timing difference between two kicks that was causing distortion and a timing flam. I ended up moving one of the kicks 3 samples earlier to line them up and it felt cleaner.
Fingers crossed I’ve fixed it!

Transient design! It’s been a week of changing the envelope of sounds to get the mix to feel good.
Swipe left and right to see two examples of using Articulate by - a cool plugin for modifying the attack, decay, sustain and release.
One example I’m opening up the sustain on some bass notes to help fill out the low end. Often low end management is about volume and time rather than just frequency.
The second example is automating the attack up on a synth sound to give the chorus more of a kick.
Both of these are fairly subtle but these subtle moves all add up.

In other news, I’ve been playing with using Pro L2 to limit the sides only on a vinyl master after using Simulathe to identify any potential problems. Super cool!

It’s sunny in the UK now so it’s bbq time. Enjoy the weekend.

Do you think having analogue gear is important?
I do, but not necessarily because of how it sounds. I like the workflow, the way I GET a sound when I’m using the analogue gear, partly because I can ignore my eyes.

Here’s a clip from my video on YouTube comparing using my analogue mix bus to software equivalents. Go check out the full video:

What do you reckon? Can you hear a difference?

This week….
I accidentally shaved off my beard. Not good. It’s coming back though.
Swipe to see:
1. The tiny volume adjustments I have to make to get strings to feel right
2. How I used a short reverb and Shaperbox to get a pluck to sound cool
3. Making a sampled/midi guitar sound more natural with tape, Ocean Way Studios, reverb and compression.

Have a great weekend. Don’t shave anything off that should be there…

Good week! Nearly finished my studio changes (basically painting stuff this week). Thank god!

The album is nearly finished. I just did a few last minute balancing tweaks to help the tracks sit together, ahead of it going to mastering. Also .music has a great track “feel better” out today that I did a final bus mix/master on.

If you swipe, you’ll see a few other bits:
1. What happens when you do ‘blind’ eq - using your ears not your eyes
2. Using mid/side mode on my SSL The Bus + to help the mix breathe

You want MORE reverb??!
OK, no problem.

This track needed to build and build, so we kept adding layers of strings, drums, arpeggios and vocals, and poured them into loads of reverb. The tension and release is awesome. We used Valhalla, Lexicon 224, Supermassive, and loads of automation.
