Little recap of the stories I’ve posted this week, whilst I wait for the fryer to heat up.

1. I was intrigued by how different two EQ’s (SSL EQ and Fab Filter Pro Q4) sounded with what looked like the same settings, so I messed around with plugin doctor to figure out what was going on. Interesting!
2. I found that the current arkangel track I was working on sounded a bit empty in the bass when monitoring the mix through my phone, so this video demonstrates how that sounded and how using Spectre to boost around 180Hz, filling out the harmonics helped.

Right. Back to the chips.

Released last week, “Let Me” by is a lovely tune. Here’s me going through what I did to get the low end right.
I think there’s a schoolboy error on this, because it looks like I didn’t engage the sidechain inside Soothe for the main plucks. Doh! Sounded good anyways.

Been back in own studio this week. I’ve realised it’s the dogs that are the biggest distraction, especially around this time of day (nearly dinner time).

BBY GRL by Frameworks is all about groove. I wanted to help that groove come to the forefront, so here’s the three main things I did:
1. Mix bus - compression and EQ to add bounce, movement and improve the clarity and energy
2. Bring out the brass - the live brass on this sounded a bit thin and needed more focus in the mix. A low mid boost with saturation (using Spectre) and a high mid dip really helped.
3. Clean the low end - the piano had non-musical low end (sustain pedal noises) that were cluttering the bass, and both piano and bass needed side chaining off the kick. I also did some shifting of a two piano notes to remove flamming that made the low end untidy.

There were loads of other little bits but these were the key moves to take it over the edge. Such a cool track.

What makes for making good music? (excluding the actual ideas)
The gear?
The space?
The time?
How you feel?

I spent the last two days testing an idea - what would it be like to ‘go to work’ at a studio that isn’t at home. It’s been good, and I’ve really enjoyed the sense that I’m just here to do this. No interruptions, no distractions.

That said, I prefer the sound of my studio and my gear, but maybe my future is having a space somewhere.

Come on - set up somewhere in Derbyshire!

I’ve been testing out .app for the last month to share mixes and get revision notes. I moved to it because it streams in full quality but actually really like how bigger projects build up and can be played like they will on streaming, one song after the next. Really cool

A good week for music, and in particular for bass sounds. Swipe right to see:
1) the best bass sound I’ve heard for a while. Big, full, characterful and wide af
2) a run through of how I’ve dealt with an AI stem extracted live guitar, where the stem removal also brought out a rhythm guitar that was already in the arrangement, but sounding wierd. A combination of volume and EQ automation helped make it sound more cohesive.

I’m switching off to enjoy some family time.

- an obvious example of phase cancellation and how inverting the phase on one of the sounds makes the combination sound fuller
- how sometimes manual gain automation is the best way to deal with artifacts caused by slightly quirky compression on a stem

Another week, another mini rant. I found myself sidetracked by the visual display on Pro MB - where it “showed me” that I was doing a lot of compression on the high end of a guitar. But why do we get pulled in by something visual when the end result is not visual? So, it was the correct amount of compression. Because it sounded right.

A quieter week in the world of mixing, because I’ve taken some time to review a first full cut of a ‘mixing mindset’ course I’ve been working on.
Not totally quiet though, so scroll left to see me using dynamic EQ to control the opening filter on a wicked lead synth, just trying to ensure we don’t make people’s ears bleed 😂.
Finally, the dog count has hit a new high in the studio today with our cocker spaniel Eden, my brother’s Labrador Dexter and our 4 month old golden retriever puppy Milo all enjoying my air conditioning. Until the doorbell goes and they give me a heart attack with their inane barking.
