🪨 The Breathing Wall, an exhibition by Daniel Godínez Nivón 🪨
🗓️ Launches on Saturday 26 September, 6-8pm at Void Art Centre

The team at Void Art Centre are excited to welcome you to our next exhibition ‘The Breathing Wall’ by artist Daniel Godínez Nivón.

The exhibition, developed across a year and a half of artistic research, explores the material and ecological life of Derry’s historic walls. Encounters with the stone and the plants growing in its crevices, together with conversations with people dedicated to the wall’s care, including Friends of the Derry Walls and a local stonemason, shaped the research and offered ways of approaching the wall across different scales of time.

Daniel’s practice explores dreaming as a shared space for encountering other forms of life and sparking collective imagination. Bringing together dreams, ecological relationships and different forms of knowledge, his work explores the possibility of an ecosystem of dreams: a territory shared by humans, plants, stones and other beings’ 🌱 ‘The Breathing Wall’ is an invitation to dream with a place and the many forms of life and memory it holds.

‘Animale’ is a solo exhibition by British-Finnish artist Hanna Tuulikki. The exhibition sees a new commission for Void, the moving image piece ‘Seahorse’ alongside previous work.

The featured works move between ritual, lament and testimony, tracing cycles of violence, trauma, care and interdependence, positioning voice, gesture and multi-species communication as sites through which alternative, more attentive ways of being might be rehearsed 🌱

🌱🪨Visit from Daniel Godínez Nivón 🪨🌱

Earlier in August, we were joined by artist Daniel Godínez Nivón for a second time as we started on-the-ground preparations for his upcoming exhibition ‘The Breathing Stone’ which opens on Saturday 26 September 2026 at Void.

During his visit, we worked on elements of the exhibition’s production including a visit from Helena Gouveia Monteiro to create a 16mm film and a trip to Omagh to acquire a stone 🤝 With thanks to our technician Barry Davies and artist Chris Campbell Palmer who gave their time to chat installation and fabrication.

The final day of Daniel’s visit entailed a workshop, ‘Lullaby for a Dreaming Wall’ at The Playhouse. The workshop saw participants consider dreaming, its relation to the shist rock and plant life within the city’s walls, and ended with us reflectively embodying stone.

🎞️ A visit from Helena Gouveia Monteiro from Dubh Film Lab 🎞️

This week, we were joined by film maker Helena Gouveia Monteiro as part of the production of work for artist Daniel Godínez Nivón’s upcoming exhibition ‘The Breathing Stone’ 🪨 🌱 Together, we made a 16mm film using Phytography, a plant-based photography technique, and plants donated by maintenance workers on the Derry city walls, including Wandering Sailor and Pellitory of the wall.

‘The Breathing Stone’ opens at Void Art Centre on Saturday 26 September 2026.

💭Workshop: Lullaby for a Dreaming Wall with Daniel Godínez Nivón 💭
🗓️ Saturday 15 August 2026, 1-3pm at The Playhouse

‘If dreaming is an experience shared by all living beings, what might the plants and stones of Derry’s walls dream of? Can dreams become a shared space of knowledge through which we perceive our surroundings differently?’

Developed as part of the research for ‘The Breathing Stone’, this workshop invites participants to walk along Derry’s historic walls and discover the hidden stories of the medicinal plants, fossilised sea creatures embedded in the stone, and the delicate ecosystem they sustain together.

Through attentive walking, conversation and drawing, we will explore dreams as a shared territory where humans, plants, stones and other living beings may encounter one another 🌱🪨 Rather than understanding dreams as something exclusively human, the workshop proposes dreaming as an ecological space that can cultivate tenderness, care and new ways of relating to our environment.

Open to everyone, the workshop combines a guided walk along Derry’s walls followed by a collective drawing session at the Playhouse ✍️ Together we will reflect on the invisible relationships that sustain the living wall and imagine other ways of listening to the landscapes that surround us.

🤝 A Saturday well spent with Void x Ulster University PhD Researcher Ashab Ahmad and Declan McGonagle 🤝

Thank you to everyone who joined us for ‘The City is the Gallery’, an illustrated talk about the Orchard Gallery’s programme, delivered by its first director Declan McGonagle.

During the talk, organised by Ashab, Declan McGonagle discussed the Orchard Gallery’s beginnings and detailed previous projects over his tenure from 1978 to 1991. We learnt about the organisation’s work across the city, not necessarily contained to white cube gallery spaces, with interaction with the local context central to many projects 📍It was particularly brilliant to hear about the Orchard Gallery’s work with Anthony Gormley on Derry’s City Walls, as well as their connection to punk happenings across the city.

How might movement become a shared cultural practice again?

The penultimate week of my two-month residency at Wigwell Lodge, supported by Void Art Centre and The Ampersand Foundation, has revealed that this work is becoming less about making objects and more about remembering relationships.

As I approach the final weeks of my 100-day fieldwork, this residency has been integral in noticing the immutable transformations, from walking through forests of Derry~Londonderry, to carrying those intentions, materials and encounters into the studio. A time to pause, reflect, and filter ideas into the next stage of Future Foresting.

Walking, carrying, squatting, writing and making have become a continuous practice, revealing how clay, bone, forests and minerals each record forces, conditions and traces of a particular time.

My research follows Mesolithic Forest cultures, from Mountsandel on the River Bann to Star Carr in Yorkshire, where movement, survival and relationships with the more-than-human world were inseparable. Archaeologist Graeme Warren suggests that many hunter-gatherer societies understood humans, animals and spirits as "co-inhabitants" rather than separate categories. That perspective continues to shape how I think with forests; not as landscapes we occupy, but as living systems we belong to.

The stones and clay I carried have shaped me as much as I shaped or carried these minerals.

Tree rings, soil chromatographies and the architecture of bone all reveal patterns of force, adaptation and time. They remind me that movement begins from the ground up: from earth, through the pelvis, into the spine. Listening becomes both practical and poetic as we imagine healthier relationships with ourselves, each other and the more-than-human world.

The work now returns to the studio, unfolding through sculpture, writing, collaboration and public participation towards a future exhibition next year.
