The story of London’s fashion industry is inseparable from the story of the Jewish East End.

This Jewish Culture Month, we explore the streets where Jewish tailors, traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs built businesses, created opportunities and transformed the way Britain dressed. From Petticoat Lane to Brick Lane and beyond, their influence can still be seen across the city today.
Their legacy isn’t confined to history books—it’s woven into London’s fabric.

📍Anish Kapoor at Southbank Centre’s .gallery, running 16 June to 18 October 2026.

Suspended from the ceiling is Anish Kapoor’s Mount Moriah at the Gate of the Ghetto (2022) - a gruesome, threatening, blood-red mass, weighing four and a half tonnes.

JCM’s Liat Rosenthal chatted with Ralph Rugoff — curator of the exhibition and Director of the Hayward Gallery — to unpack Kapoor’s fascination with sacrifice: an ancient ritual which reckons with death and faith … somewhere between horror 🩸 and wonder ✨

The work takes its name from Mount Moriah — the site where, in the Book of Genesis, Abraham is commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac, and a ram is offered in his place.

Anish Kapoor opens at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre, tomorrow, 16 June, and runs until 18 October 2026. What a way to mark the end of Jewish Culture Month tomorrow, with the opening of Anish Kapoor’s exhibition, an artist whose own mother came from an Iraqi-Jewish family, and whose grandfather was a cantor.
