The White Bike

A few pictures from the brilliant performances at Bodens Performing Arts to show that although the original production had an ensemble cast of only 5, it's perfectly possible to perform THE WHITE BIKE with 40 young people, in two casts of 20 each.

I loved the movement sequences they devised and the opportunities this offered in crowd scenes, especially in traffic scenes, the club scene and the onlookers after the crash scene. It added hugely to the experience of watching it, especially as this then contrasted with the more intimate scenes.

I was at this memorial ride for Eilidh as I was writing The White Bike and talking to Kate about her experience of losing her sister in a road crash. Kate invited me. I felt so honoured to have been part of it, and to have met her family and friends, who could all have been my own family and friends. This is the randomness of road death, it comes out of nowhere and can hit anyone. We're all vulnerable road users not just as cyclists but as pedestrians too.

I started writing The White Bike days after Eilidh Cairns was killed. It's very much her story. But in the 15 years since, 1000 (one thousand) more cyclists have been killed under construction industry wheels.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with Eilidh's story, do keep telling it.
