– Alexander Calder and his world of spirals!

Calder was fascinated by the hidden rhythms of the natural world — the orbit of planets, the curl of a serpent, the flow of water, and the delicate balance between chaos and order. Through bold circles, spirals and sweeping lines, he captured the fluidity and energy of these forms.

His spirals draw the eye on a continuous journey, creating a sense of movement and rhythm across the composition. Explore these artworks in person at our gallery on 94 New Bond Street.

In 'Seahorse' (1962), Alexander Calder brings a recognisable marine form to life through gouache and ink. Bold areas of colour, sweeping brushstrokes and confident lines work together to create a composition that feels both playful and remarkable.

The technique is deceptively simple: fluid, spontaneous marks are balanced by carefully placed shapes, giving the seahorse a wonderful sense of movement and energy.

Currently on view at our gallery.

Frieze Masters 2026 opens in one week, and we're excited to welcome you at our stand A07.

This year, we will be presenting works by 20th-century women artists, alongside women who inspired some of the Modern Masters of the same period.

Until then, here's a throwback image from last year's fair, featuring Picasso's 'La Suite des Saltimbanques'.

- Alexander Calder in his studio.

Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was one of the most innovative sculptors of the 20th-century, best known for revolutionising modern sculpture through movement. An American artist, Calder pioneered kinetic art and is celebrated internationally for his mobiles — suspended forms that move in response to air currents — as well as his monumental static sculptures, known as stabiles.

Born in Pennsylvania into a family of artists, Calder initially trained as a mechanical engineer. After moving to Paris in the 1920s, he gained recognition for his intricate wire sculptures and the celebrated Cirque Calder, a miniature circus brought to life through performance. A visit to Piet Mondrian’s studio in 1930 inspired Calder’s move towards abstraction and ultimately led to the creation of his first mobiles.

Works by Calder are currently on view at our gallery as part of our exhibition 'Alexander Calder: Art in Motion' on 94 New Bond Street.

As the leaves turn and the garden slips into its golden hush, Rory Hutton’s 'Autumn' (2023) captures the season in all its theatrical splendour — where colour lingers, nature takes centre stage, and every fallen leaf feels like part of the design.

A celebration of autumn, cut in linocut: richly layered, wonderfully whimsical, and made for the season of change.

- In 'Pennants' (1965), Alexander Calder transforms lithography into colourful movement. Bold primary colours, sweeping black lines and crisp geometric forms are layered across the paper, creating the sensation of shapes suspended in motion.

Though entirely static, the composition seems to pivot, flutter and spin — a graphic translation of the balance and kinetic energy that define Calder’s mobiles.

'Pennants' is currently on view at our gallery, as part of our exhibition 'Alexander Calder: Art and Motion'.

Alexander Calder's world is one of colour, balance and motion — where stars spin, lines dance and even the quietest composition seems ready to take flight.

'Art and Motion' brings together gouaches, drawings, lithographs and tapestries, revealing the playful visual language behind one of modernism's great masters of movement.
