Introduction

Described as “a study in stealth, in which we see the meek inherit the earth,” Alys, Always is a fast-paced, psychological thriller. When first published the novel was a best-seller and hugely popular. This stage adaptation (originally seen at the Bridge Theatre in 2019} will give those familiar with the novel a chance to see a gripping new version and those coming to it for the first time to experience a deeply unsettling and intriguing story which details the transformation of a ruthlessly ambitious “ugly duckling” into a beautiful and manipulative swan.

Plot

The play’s central character, Frances, is a timid, unappreciated, but capable, office dogsbody, who works on the books section of a Sunday newspaper. Her life begins to change when she witnesses a fatal car accident and learns that the crash victim is Alice Kyte, wife of the famous novelist Laurence Kyte. When the Kyte family contacts Frances to thank her for comforting the dying Alys, Frances senses her chance to escape the humdrum life she leads and to enter the privileged world of the rich and famous. Frances becomes a trusted confidante of the Kyte family and shamelessly exploits her newfound connection to advance her career. Frances’s principal target is Laurence Kyte, novelist husband of Alys and increasingly in thrall to his new muse, Frances. Laurence is so blinded by his own self-importance, he is easily wrong-footed and manipulated by the scheming Frances, who sees him clearly for what he is – a vain and ageing womaniser. By the end of the play, Frances has morphed from the perpetually put-upon skivvy to a self-assured and cunning sociopath, who is firmly established in the Kyte household and plotting her next move.

Principal Roles

Frances Thorpe – late 20s / early 30s. The play’s central character who also acts as narrator. Shy and retiring at the start of the play, Frances gradually exploits her good fortune to become ruthlessly sly and manipulative. Displays increasingly disturbing behaviour.

Mary Pym – 40s. Books Editor, Frances’s boss. Forthright, formidable, harassed, caustic.

Laurence Kyte – 50s. Famous novelist. Widower. Rich, smug, an ageing womaniser.

Polly Kyte – early 20s. Laurence’s daughter. A drama student. Insecure, fragile, shallow.

Supporting Roles

Alys Kite – late 40s / 50s. Laurence’s wife. Injured in the car accident which opens the play. Kind, artistic, dignified. (Could be doubled with Mrs Thorpe.)

Female Police Officer – 20s/30s. Attends the car accident. Sympathetic, kind, helpful. (Could be doubled with Audrey Cullum.)

Oliver Culpepper – mid-20s. Deputy Books Editor. Loud, extrovert, lazy, displays an oily charm.

Sid – 30s. Work colleague attracted to Frances. Friendly, chatty.

Robin McAlfree – elderly. Harassed newspaper editor. (Could be doubled with Mr Thorpe.)

Charlotte Black – 50s / 60s. Family friend of the Kyte’s and Laurence’s agent. Warm, friendly.

Teddy Kyte – mid 20s. Laurence’s son. Taciturn, angry, suspicious of Frances’s motives.

Mrs Thorpe – 60s. Retired. Frances’s mother. Conventional, staid, set in her ways.

Mr Thorpe – 60s. Retired. Frances’s father. Kindly, conservative, respectable.

Audrey Cullum – 40s. Journalist. Loud, brash, extrovert.

Receptionist – will probably be recorded.

Non-Speaking Roles – Julia Price; Waiter; Courier

Christmas Eve, 1946, Bedford Falls. George Bailey, a man of hopes and dreams, feels life has passed him by, and he's at the end of his rope. So when Clarence Oddbody, his guardian angel, pays him a visit, we (and Clarence) learn what has led to this moment and George is given the opportunity to discover what life in his beloved town would be like without him in it.
Based on the critically acclaimed 1946 Frank Capra movie of the same name, this Christmas classic is brought to life in this heart-warming magical adaptation. Mary Elliott Nelson's reimagining is a joyful story of love, hope and community.
In a recount of his life up until he decides to jump into the frozen river, George, with the help of Clarence and the other angels of heaven, encounters various people from his early years. These include his supportive wife Mary Hatch, his eccentric Uncle Billy who runs the family Building and Loan and the antagonist, Mr Potter, who threatens to take the Baileys’ company down, among a whole host of other characters that enables George to learn, of his truly wonderful life.
At this point, if the plot line rings a bell, this is no surprise, as the book, upon which the original film is based, is inspired by another Christmas staple, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, but the similarities of these stories do not at all take away the enjoyment of this charming version of the story.
The play has a cast of 7 (Originally 4) playing over 20 characters so a level of stamina and commitment is required. A number of characters have an acting age of 13 and under but will be played by adult cast. We see the characters being cast as follows, but this is open to change:

OPENS TONIGHT! The New Stagers have been working so hard on this production. Don't miss the opportunity to see this hard-hitting play....
Blood Brothers tells the story of Eddie and Mickey, twins separated at birth. Becoming best friends, but unaware of their connection, the play follows the lives of these twins: one struggling with the effects of poverty, and the other growing up in a world in which money is never an issue.
New Stagers, the theatre's youth group, has been working incredibly hard to put on this production. Rehearsals are full of fun, laughter and memories that’ll last a lifetime. We hope this will reflect in the performance and that the audience will enjoy it as much as our glorious performers have enjoyed making it.
Tickets for the production (July 5th 7.30 & 6th 7.30 & 2.30) are on sale now. We'd love to see you there!

DON'T MISS OUT ON THE CHANCE TO SEE THIS COWARD CLASSIC...
“Blithe Spirit” is probably one of the most famous and
durable plays written by Noel Coward. Written over a
weekend in Portmeirion, North Wales, whilst convalescing
from an illness, it has proved to become a classic of the
British Theatre. It is an improbable farce about a séance
held at the home of Charles Condomine, an author, who
lives there with his second wife Ruth. Along with their
friends Dr and Mrs Bradman they invite the eccentric
Madame Arcati, a local medium, to conduct the séance .
Charles' dead wife, Elvira is conjured up and is seen only
by Charles. After that all mayhem sets loose as Charles
and Ruth battle with Elvira. They bring back Madame
Arcati try to have Elvira exorcised. Things take a turn for
the “worse”, when Ruth is killed accidentally and Charles
has to contend with two
dead wives!
Can the maid Edith be the answer to the problem? “Blithe Spirit” is
witty and hilarious, played by a superb cast who bring the play to life!
It really shouldn't be missed.
