Every August, London makes theatre on its own terms.
This year, a clutch of it comes to Hampstead.

Circle & Star joins the Camden Fringe as a venue — four companies, world premieres and new work, played to a room of fifty-five. A festival within the festival.

📅 Train to Cleveland with John Ruskin · Wed–Fri 5–7 Aug · 8pm
A burnt-out PhD student shares a carriage with the Victorian critic John Ruskin. A new play with music.

📅 Girls’ Night Out · Sat–Sun 8–9 Aug · 7:30pm
A long-overdue reunion at a too-trendy Dublin restaurant. An Irish comedy. World premiere.

📅 How Do I Love Thee? · Wed–Thu 19–20 Aug · 7:30pm
The woman behind the most famous line in English love poetry — Elizabeth Barrett Browning, fighting to be heard. A new play. World premiere.

📅 Mother Tongue · Sat–Sun 22–23 Aug · 7pm
A migrant crosses a border, and their mother tongue starts to fade. Visual theatre with live opera. World premiere.

The work is theirs. The room is ours.

And a proper room to play it in — its own entrance, fully air-conditioned, thirty seconds from the Tube.

McAlmont & McAlmont.

One voice. One career. One room that knew what it was hearing.
On Saturday, David sat down in front of 55 people and traced a life in song — part concert, part live memoir. From Thieves, through McAlmont & Butler, to everything since.

The room held its breath. Then it didn’t — because some songs ask you to sing back.
One night. One room. Never quite the same twice.

[SOLD OUT] McAlmont & Madonna closes the residency on Sat 18 July — the spectacle stripped back, the songs made strange and new again.

What a night.

Our Mrs Robinson evening at Circle & Star brought together performance, memory, Hollywood legend and live sound in the closest possible quarters — the kind of night that only really works when the audience is right there in the room with you.

Featuring Tracy-Ann Oberman as Anne Bancroft, Gary Kemp as Mike Nichols, Will Barton as Larry Turman, Johnny Hart as Narrator, Terry Mynott as Gene Hackman and Frank Sinatra, Steve Furst as Mel Brooks, and Elijah Lifton on sound effects.

One audience member told us it was “the best thing I’ve experienced live in many years.”

That means a huge amount. Circle & Star was created for exactly this kind of encounter: intimate, immediate, beautifully human, and impossible to repeat in quite the same way again.

Many thanks to all involved — and especially to Tracy-Ann Oberman for leading such a memorable evening.

Should we do more evenings like this?

The lights go down in Hampstead this September.

REEL NOTES is the screening salon at Circle & Star — one film a month, seen the way the films we love deserve. A forty-five-minute deep dive into the picture, then the lights go down, the phones go away, and we watch it whole. Fifty-five seats, watching together.

Volume One:
📅 № 001 · The Graduate (1967) — Thu 3 Sep
📅 № 002 · The Wicker Man (1973) — Thu 15 Oct · part of DARK MATTERS
📅 № 003 · Announced soon — Thu 5 Nov
📅 № 004 · Announced soon — Thu 17 Dec

£18 a salon. Or the season pass — £60 for all four films: one passcard, your seat held and reserved at every screening, and a goodie bag of good things to eat. 40 passes only.

This is not a cinema trip. It’s a salon — and the room is the point.

🗓 Four Thursdays · Doors 6:45pm · Talk 7:00 · Film 8:00 · Out by 10:30
📍 28 Heath Street, Hampstead NW3
🎟 55 seats per evening — link in bio

This autumn, the room plays along.

Something new at Circle & Star: Curious Minds — live quizzes and polls, built for a room of 55.

Your phone is the buzzer. Scan a code, pick a name, and answer from your seat. The questions go up on the big screen, a compère keeps it moving, and every score lands live — the whole room, playing at once.

Great hosts. The best questions. Never the same night twice.

No app. Nothing to download. Live and in the room.

DARK MATTERS is a modern-gothic season at Circle & Star. Five works across one October fortnight — narrated, sung and spoken — drawn from the literature and music that live in the shadow of our imagination.

Not darkness for shock. Darkness for clarity — the kind that strips away the noise and leaves only the voice, the sound, the presence in the room.

📅 17–21 Oct · Just be a good person, actually — a darkly funny psychological horror. A new play by Julia Pagett.
📅 22–23 Oct · Frankenstein — Unchained — Mary Shelley, unbound. Narrated by Madeline Smith, scored live by Jason Frederick.
📅 31 Oct · Dark Beige — Lenny Beige closes the season, torch songs after midnight, on All Hallows’ Eve.
📅 14–16 Oct & 24–25 Oct · two more works, announced soon.

Fifty-five seats. No distance. The dark is the point.

The first since early spring. The last until late autumn.

One hot summer’s night in between — and when it’s gone, that’s it until the leaves turn.

Lenny Beige returns to Circle & Star with the songs that only belong to summer. Love. Celebration.

Longing. The warm night that won’t end, the window left open, the feeling you want to hold on to a little longer.

First voice confirmed: Liane Carroll — one of the most celebrated singers in British jazz. The phrasing other singers study. The warmth that wins a room before the first chorus is finished.

This is STAGES at Circle & Star. Fifty-five seats. This one will sell out — book now.

✨ Further guests to be announced.
