One of the most beautiful lessons in Arabic calligraphy begins with a simple letter: Alif — ا
Its form may look uncomplicated, but in traditional calligraphy, a straight stroke demands control, consistency, and a trained eye.
Depending on the script and its rules, the proportions of Alif can help establish the scale of other letters. That is one reason students study individual letterforms so carefully before attempting complex compositions.
Sometimes the simplest line reveals the greatest skill.
