BUTOH & THE IMAGINATION
14 December
2:00pm - 5:30pm
upstairs in Studio 1

With Mim King

Butoh (dance of transformation) is an avant-garde dance method created in Japan in the late 1950's. This workshop explores Butoh dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites.

The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression.

Suitable for complete beginners and those with experience in performing arts, acting, dance & movement. Perfect to add to the tool kit of all theatre makers, but especially those making physical and visual work.

£35 Early Bird (book by midday on 2 December)

GUINEA PIGS
10 November

Part of: VOILA! THEATRE FESTIVAL

Three big sisters across cultures are united by a single purpose: to stop being so damn responsible for everyone. But when their Generative Response Aid for Communication and Emotional Labour (G.R.A.C.E.) starts malfunctioning, will Angie, Lia, and Margot manage to save their invention while resolving familial challenges along the way?

Centering the theme of siblinghood and chosen family, this show asks 'How has being first-born shaped us, and what can we learn or unlearn through encountering ourselves away from our family?' GUINEA PIGS is a comedic physical theatre piece that explores family hierarchies, gender roles, and what it means to care for each other and ourselves.

STAMPIN' IN THE GRAVEYARD
8 - 9 November

Part of: VOILA! THEATRE FESTIVAL

Rose is an AI chatbot that gives advice for the end of the world, powered by a black box of memories from people whose worlds have already ended. Tonight, Rose unfolds the archives she has salvaged (and fabricates a few in true AI fashion), to learn about the woman who created her.

STAMPIN’ IN THE GRAVEYARD is an immersive headphone experience that fuses poetry, live music and movement to draw the audience into this ephemeral apocalyptic world.

COPLA: A SPANISH CABARET
7 November

Part of: VOILA! THEATRE FESTIVAL

Copla, practically unknown in England, is essential to Spain's cultural and political history. Copla songs channel the q***r and migrant experiences in Spain’s early musicals, hitting all the right notes for gay people who love to laugh and cry to divas and their melodramatic music.

Copla once served as political tool against repression - first under Franco’s dictatorship, and later for Spanish LGBTQ communities. This show addresses themes like the translation of musicals, living away from one’s homeland, q***r reinterpretation of songs and the negotiation of cultural identities.

Q***r migrant performer Alejandro Postigo de-constructs the traditional Spanish songs and shares their historical significance for q***r collectives, inviting the audience to be part of the dialogue. Through his performance of English Copla and sharing his life stories, you'll witness his rebirth as alter ego La Gitana, with live music, a drink in hand and lots of interaction

WALL OF BABEL
7 - 9 November

Part of: VOILA! THEATRE FESTIVAL

Three bodies on stage, confronting each other’s tongue; mother tongue. They are in a state of constant translation; until words are not enough, until movement, music, memories are not enough.

Wall of Babel is a multilingual piece interrogating concepts of identity, language, and translation. The fragmented narrative of the performance, taking the structure of the human cycle, revolves around the character's growth and their attempts at communication. The audience does not always understand what the three bodies say, but it is present throughout.

From children playing hide and seek; to teenagers seeing their bodies change; to adults going to war – RATATATTATATATA – BOOOOOM; and then becoming elderly. The performance captures the challenges, humour and beauty of multilingual communication, venturing into non-verbal expression through movement and imagery.

Produced and presented by Nefeli Kentoni

MASO SCHISM
5 & 8 November

Part of VOILA! THEATRE FESTIVAL

When does catharsis become self-harm? Where do we draw the line?

Best friends Katie and Anastasia have shared everything since childhood — from scraping their knees as children to getting their first tattoos as teenagers. Now, as adults, each woman has a relationship with pain the other doesn’t understand.

Set in a neon-lit world of firing synapses and stinging flesh, MASO SCHISM grapples with the complexity of female masochism by inviting the audience into a playground of pain. This surrealist piece of physical theatre incorporates elements of performance art to experiment with real pain and explore the limits of bodily autonomy.

TWELFTH NIGHT
14-16 November

In a great body of work spanning over 50 years, there are not many Shakespeare plays that Footsbarn have not put their legendary name to, but Twelfth Night is one, which is why artistic director Sadie Jemmett felt that it was the right moment to tackle this most bold and bittersweet masterpiece.

Now, perhaps more than any other time, this play comes into its own by exploring the themes of gender identity that our young generation is bringing to the world's attention.

The Production focuses on the classic storyline of Love and Loss while drawing attention to the darker subplots of pride, hatred and revenge, which Shakespeare masterfully wove into the tale.

Swept along, in true Footsbarn style, in a frolic of rich costumes, live music and classic comedy clowning. This is a dark Shakespeare comedy by a heritage company, delivering a solid good night out.

384 DAYS
3 November

A one-woman, tragic comedy.

Set in a mental health unit, it follows aspiring magician Molly O'Riordan over a 24-hour psychological evaluation.

During these 24 hours, Molly works on a trick that will change the face of magic forever, while trying to persuade her psychiatrists that she's fit for release. But, in doing so, she's forced to confront some bitter truths about herself, her father, and the life waiting for her back home - truths she's tirelessly tried to detach herself from.

384 Days is a bold and brave account of grief and endurance. It speaks to the absurdity of our coping mechanisms in the face of trauma, and the relentless perseverance of the human spirit.

Ultimately, it's a tale of finding meaning, connection, joy, and hope against all the odds.

Written and performed by Megan Ita O’Rourke.
