🌞 Faith Ringgold, The Beach & Dancing on the George Washington Bridge quilts.

🌞There’s a heatwave in the UK, which put us in mind of Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach - a children’s book and accompanying quilt that tells the story of Cassie, who escapes a heatwave in Harlem by flying above the city.

Miriam Schapiro (1923-2015), a leader of the 20th century feminist art movement. Schapiro’s work incorporated textiles and ‘feminine’ coded mediums to challenge art historical hierarchies that set painting above textiles and decorative art. With Judy Chicago, she co-founded the highly influential California Institute of the Arts Feminist Art Program in the early 1970s.
