Artwork of the week | Aziza Kadyri

This week, we spotlight Aziza Kadyri’s Self-Exoticisation Archives IV, 2023, from her ongoing AI Suzani Series: Self-exoticisation Archives.

Drawing on the Central Asian tradition of Suzani embroidery, Kadyri trains generative AI on ornamental patterns before projecting the resulting motifs back onto her own image. Moving between portraiture, textile and machine vision, the work explores how heritage and identity can be reframed — or flattened — through algorithmic systems.

By deliberately engaging in an act of “self-exoticisation”, Kadyri questions orientalist framing, algorithmic bias and cultural commodification, reclaiming the visual codes through which her identity has often been mediated.

These concerns continue in Kadyri’s recent site-specific installation Sender Unknown at the V&A (), London, which brings together textile, AI, an interactive responsive element and a historic suzani from the museum’s collection.

The work was previously exhibited in Subject to Change at Gazelli Art House, London, in 2025.

Coming Soon | Dominic Myatt at the London Project Space

Gazelli Art House London’s Project Space presents an exhibition of new and recent works by Dominic Myatt.

Drawing on fragments of everyday life and the energy of the city, Myatt builds deliberately unsettled compositions through layers of image, line and colour.

Familiar forms emerge within gestural painted surfaces, creating works that move between humour, nostalgia and moments of unease.

Referencing the visual language of animated cartoons, Myatt treats each canvas almost as an individual frame, inviting viewers to decipher and construct their own narratives.

Artwork of the week | Charles Csuri

Highlighting Charles Csuri’s Red Sinewave, 1970, one of the artist’s rarest plotter works.

Created using an IBM 7094 and Cal Comp 565 drum plotter, the work marks a pivotal moment in Csuri’s early exploration of computer-generated image making. Rather than transforming a hand-drawn image, Red Sinewave was built from a mathematical sinewave function engineered by the artist to simulate three-dimensional form.

Both visually striking and historically significant, the work reflects Csuri’s groundbreaking role in the development of 3D computer art and digital animation, laying the foundations for new ways of thinking about image, movement and technology.

Spotlighting Helen Pashgian’s Untitled (Light Green Sphere), 1970, currently presented as part of Gazelli Art House’s Continuous Abstraction at The Armory Show.

A pioneering figure of the Light and Space movement, Pashgian has long explored the relationship between light, colour, transparency and perception. Cast in polyester resin and formed acrylic, the work uses the optical qualities of its materials to make light appear almost embedded within the object itself.

The sphere is central to this effect: without a beginning or end, front or back, its continuous form feels physically complete, while shifting reflections and transparency give it an almost weightless, internally illuminated presence.

Gazelli Art House artists take over Times Square

This week, works by Memo Akten & Katie Hofstadter, Jake Elwes and Brendan Dawes take over the monumental screens of Times Square, New York, as part of GIANT SIGNALS during Armory Week.

Presented by Disiva at Times Square, the project brings contemporary digital practice into the heart of the city, transforming its LED architecture into a temporary space for art and public encounter.

On view:

Memo Akten & Katie Hofstadter — Superradiance
Combining dance, poetry, neuroscience, code and generative AI, Superradiance explores embodiment and our connection to the wider living world.

Brendan Dawes — Persian Dreams
Inspired by Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, the work reimagines the Persian epic through AI-driven moving image, shifting between figuration and abstraction.

Jake Elwes — Z**i
Part of Elwes’ ongoing Z**i Project, the work brings AI into dialogue with drag, challenging bias within machine-learning systems while celebrating q***r identity and representation.

Revisiting our artist talk for Interweave at Gazelli Art House in London, bringing together exhibiting artists LoVid () and aurèce vettier (), moderated by Julia Greenway ().

In this excerpt, aurèce vettier reflects on the process behind his textile works, moving from AI-generated imagery to physical tapestry. Drawing on custom-trained models and personal archives, his practice brings together memory, machine processes and image-making before translating them into tactile form.

Interweave is on view at Gazelli Art House, London, until 25 September.
