Today’s activity was partly inspired by artist Kader Attia, and partly by one of my favourite Instagram accounts

posted ages ago that she wrapped some of her son’s toys (dinosaurs I think?) in tin foil for him to unwrap and play with when they were travelling. Her photos instantly made me think of Attia’s installation Ghost. Did anyone see it at the years ago? He used wrapped and shaped tin foil to create figures in prayer. I love it as an artwork because it manages to be beautiful, haunting, fun and intriguing all at once.

So today we tried out two activities- firstly I wrapped some wooden dolls in tin foil for Arlo to open. This is great for inspiring curiosity (a key trait for any artist!) and improving dexterity and is a perfect game for younger toddlers.

Then using the same wooden dolls as a base, we created our own version of of Attia’s Ghost. We wrapped foil around the dolls to get a person shape, before carefully removing them and adjusting the foil. I think they worked pretty well! This is a great activity for slightly older kids. I’ve even run a workshop based on this to groups of year 5&6 students, where we got them to work in teams and create life sized sculptures using each other’s bodies to wrap the foil around! If you have more than one primary age kid at home and a lot of tin foil, it’s really really fun 😆 again, great for developing dexterity as well as sculpture skill, like casting and moulding, and of course teamwork! 💪

Today I made this Matisse inspired felt game. I was reminiscing recently about the fuzzy felt games I used to play with when I was little, and thought it would be great with Matisse style cut out shapes, so here it is!

It is double sided so you can choose your background colour and it also works as a pocket to hold all the felt pieces when you’re not using them. It also rolls up for easy portability and tidying away.

A great introduction to learning about composition for kids. You can experiment and try out different ideas without having to commit to glueing anything down as the felt (temporarily) sticks to itself.

Think I might make a few more - anyone interested in one?

** Damian Hirst inspired twist and spin paintings **

This is such a simple activity for that requires no special equipment - just some paint and old cardboard. It’s fun for all ages and allows for tons of experimentation and exploration of pattern and colour. It would even be a great starting point for discussing colour mixing.

1. Cut out two circles the same size from cardboard. We used an old cereal box and drew round a roll of masking tape to get the circles.
2. Put some dollops and smears of paint on one of the circles. Play around with the amounts and colours, this activity is all about the process and experimenting.
3. Sandwich your two circles together and twist them round. This will cause the paint inside to mix and spread.
4. Put them apart to reveal your masterpiece! (We love activities that have a big reveal!)
5. Go again! Try out different colour combinations or patterns.

Introducing the first Paint Misbehavin’ At Home Art Box - Specially for Christmas!

Each box contains everything you need to create 4 exciting art projects, all inspired by the snowscapes and pine trees in the work of painter Peter Doig. As well as all the high quality art materials required (plus extras to keep), you will get instruction cards for each activity and information about the artist that inspired them - plus we will throw in some extra ideas for getting creative at home.

These projects are perfect to do with your little ones, as a lockdown/rainy day activity and also make wonderful decorations for your house.

All boxes will be sent out by December 14th, and they would make excellent Christmas gifts for little artists.

Due to the nature of some of the materials (with small parts that could be a choking hazard) these boxes are designed for children ages 3 and over. Adult supervision is recommended.Younger children would need to be strictly supervised and may require help with some elements.
