Our Principal Contrabasson, Martin Field shares his 2025/26 season pick:

His choice is a monumental love story that's usually heard in the opera house rather than the concert hall, making this performance all the more special.

Watch to find out why it's his pick of the season. 🎶

What a day Saturday was.💙

The sun came out, the Royal Air Force flew overhead, and thousands of people joined us in Trafalgar Square (and online) for our 14th BMW Classics.

Led by Sir Antonio Pappano, we celebrated some of Britain's greatest music with Holst's The Planets, Elgar's Enigma Variations, and the world premiere of Louise Drewett's Four Dances, featuring LSO Discovery Young Musicians and Guildhall School Musicians. We were also delighted to welcome astronaut Tim Peake to the stage to open the concert.

Were you there? Let us know in the comments! And if you missed it, don't worry – the livestream is still available on our YouTube channel for the next 90 days.

Huge thank you to our long-term partner, BMW, as well as the Mayor of London, GLA and Westminster City Council. See you next year!🎶✨

Our Half Six Fix concert on Wednesday was a very special occasion.

The audience enjoyed a performance of Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, introduced and conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, but the evening was also an opportunity for the Orchestra and staff to thank our Managing Director, Dame Kathryn McDowell, who is stepping down after 21 years at the end of the season.

To mark this moment, the evening's performance began with a performance of Carrickfergus by Sir James MacMillan – a new work commissioned by the LSO and dedicated to Dame Kathryn in grateful recognition of her tenure as Managing Director.

After the concert, players and staff gathered at LSO St Luke's, where Dame Kathryn was presented with honorary membership of the LSO by Sarah Quinn, Sub Principal Second Violin and Chair of the Board. Honorary Membership is the highest honour that the Orchestra’s Members can bestow on someone who is not a playing member of the Orchestra, and a mark of distinction to recognise distinguished service over an extended period of time.

Thank you, Dame Kathryn, for your extraordinary leadership, dedication and support over the last 21 years.

Today a giant temporary stage in one of London's most iconic landmarks, Trafalgar Square, will host the London Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano for a free concert performed to an audience of thousands.

Watch live online from 4pm BST or join us in the Square if you can.

In 2026 and 2027, the LSO launches an ambitious multi-platform celebration of Holst’s The Planets, with BMW Classics serving as the project’s largest live-performance moment. Audiences in Trafalgar Square and online will get to hear five movements of the astrological-inspired suite — Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Uranus.

At the centre of the concert, the LSO gives the world premiere of Louise Drewitt’s new work Four Dances, which has been specially commissioned for this occasion. Her piece, written for a mixed-ability orchestra, brings together LSO and Guildhall School musicians with 55 young musicians from east London as part of the LSO Discovery programmes.

Last night's concert was dedicated to the memory of Michael Tilson Thomas, our Conductor Laureate and former Principal Conductor, a much-loved and deeply respected member of the LSO family for over 50 years, who passed away in April this year.

The music of Mahler was of great importance to Michael throughout his career, and he conducted many memorable performances of the composer's symphonies with the LSO, including his final appearances with the Orchestra in 2024: Mahler's Second and Third Symphonies. Led by our Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano last night's concert took audiences on a journey through Mahler's Fifth Symphony, alongside Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, a celebration of friendship told through music.

Friends and colleagues of Michael have shared tributes celebrating his life, legacy and music-making. You can read these on our website: https://www.lso.co.uk/remembering-michael-tilson-thomas/
