⚡ Did you know: there are 6 interludes in Peter Grimes (pieces that are played between the scenes of the opera). These pieces create the atmosphere of the village and foreshadow events that are to come. Did you know Peter Grimes was first performed in 1945 by Sadler’s Wells Opera, which later became the ENO? It has since become one of ENO’s most popular productions.

We’ve been hard at work preparing for the Season. Imagine that quick tidy of your flat before guests arrive, but your home is the west end’s largest theatre 🙃 We’ve thought about everything, from large-scale maintenance of the theatre to the tiny details right under your nose.
Here’s a little look at our Scenic Artist painstakingly restoring each tiny tile of the entrance floor mosaic. This Roman-style mosaic was laid between 1903 and 1904 but was then covered by carpet in the 60s. In recent years we restored it to its majesty, continuing to show it the love it deserves year on year.

The magic of opera is often hard to put into words, but our Creative in Residence has done just that. ✨🎶 Across our 22/23 Season, poet and spoken word artist Kieron Rennie will be creating a series of artistic responses to our opera season and work, across multiple mediums 🖋️📸 Kieron previously worked with the ENO Engage team on a specially commissioned performance piece based on young people’s experiences during lockdown for the ‘The Way I See It’, a digital exhibition in partnership with Google Arts & Culture and ACE in summer 2020. Building on ‘The Way I See It’, the aim of the ENO Creative Residency programme is to invite artists working in disciplines outside the field of opera to bring a new, fresh take on the artform, inviting audiences to experience our building and stories through a different lens – and creating new connections with our work that are at times unexpected.
