In 2025, on the first of November, the Grand Egyptian Museum opened its doors as an international destination that presents history spanning thousands of years, with each object telling the story of Egypt’s civilisation.

GEM is the largest global museum dedicated to ancient Egyptian civilisation from prehistory to the end of the Greek and Roman periods.

Mela studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1947, learning from notable professors like Kostas Dimitriadis and Michalis Tombros, and also working in Thanassis Apartis’s studio.
around 1960 when she began working with metal after learning welding techniques, sometimes using “ready-made”materials, metal sheets, parts, and even chains. This material change introduced elements of abstraction into her work, moving away from strictly traditional forms while still maintaining a representational orientation.

During the 1960s, Yablonska travelled across villages and cities in Zakarpattia, a region in Western Ukraine known for its rich folklore heritage. These experiences greatly influenced her art, prompting a shift in her style toward a naive approach characterised by vibrant colours and flattened rendering, and distinct Ukrainian folk motifs.

Gregor Kruk (1911-1988)

Kruk sculpted figures of peasants, monks, kozaks, bandura players, rabbis, working women and dancers.
As for the forms, instead of working in classical tradition of Greek and Roman antiquity, Kruk preferred Rubens like statues, executed in primitive patterns. Some of the female statues resemble pagan fertility goddesses and Stepovi Baby - prehistoric matriarchal stone statues found in the Ukraine steppe. In his works the artist often conveys pain, suffering and futility.
