Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery The world's first public art gallery. Our next exhibition, Yoshida: Three Generations of Printmaking opens 19 June.
(2248)

Dulwich Picture Gallery is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery: it was founded in 1811 when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters “for the inspection of the public”. Today the Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions alongside its Permanent Collection of Baroque masterpieces while staging a wide-ranging programme of public events, practical art and community engagement.

There are now just over three weeks left to visit Konrad Mägi before the exhibition closes on 12 July.

A pioneering figure in Estonian modernism, Mägi is celebrated for his richly coloured landscapes and distinctive artistic vision. Bringing together paintings from across his career, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the work of an artist whose reputation continues to grow internationally.

If you've already visited, we'd love to hear which painting stayed with you. If not, there's still time to discover Mägi's remarkable world before the exhibition comes to a close.

📅 Closing 12 July.

Happy birthday, Nicolas Poussin! Born in 1594, this French genius gave us one of the most electrifying crowd scenes in art history.

In The Triumph of David, young shepherd David has just defeated the giant Goliath with a single stone from his sling. Now he's making his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and Poussin captures every single reaction in the crowd. Look closely and you'll spot solemn elders, people with arms flung high and confused toddlers clinging to their mothers.

Bonus fact: An X-ray of the canvas revealed Poussin kept changing his mind, reworking the architecture and shuffling the figures, before landing on this final arrangement. Even the greats need a few drafts!

Come and see it for yourself on display in Room 11.

Saint Anthony of Padua, reunited.

Today marks the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231), the patron saint of lost and stolen things.

Our painting by Raphael, showing the saint with his characteristic lily and book, was originally part of the artist's Colonna Altarpiece, painted for a Franciscan convent in Perugia around 1502.

Over the centuries, the altarpiece was dispersed, with its panels divided between collections in London, Boston and New York. Today, our Saint Anthony of Padua is on loan to the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York where the surviving parts of the altarpiece have been reunited for the exhibition, Raphael: Sublime Poetry.

A fitting story for the feast day of the patron saint of lost things!
