Gerhard Richter’s STRIP-TOWER (2023) at Serpentine South represents a remarkable fusion of his artistic past and present, transforming his 1990 squeegee painting through a complex digital process into an immersive architectural installation. The work began with photographing and scanning an earlier abstract painting, then dividing it into increasingly fine vertical strips that were ultimately translated onto ceramic tiles covering two intersecting panels. This innovative structure creates a space visitors can enter, while its glossy surfaces reflect both the audience and the surrounding Royal Parks - a clever evolution of Richter’s longstanding interest in reflection and repetition, previously explored in his 2008 Serpentine exhibition “4900 Colours.” The installation masterfully bridges Richter’s six-decade exploration of painting, photography, and digital reproduction while adding an exciting new dimension of public interaction and architectural space, making it a significant addition to Serpentine’s historic public art program.
