Karousel Music

Karousel Music Karousel Music is a Community Interest Company - a London based collective of musicians, songwriter Get involved.

We run showcase nights in London with a friendly, family feel and a strong emphasis on respectful, attentive audiences that don’t talk through the sets. The Collective was initially founded as a response to the decaying conditions on the UK live scene for emerging artists: With the pay-to-play model becoming ever more prevalent and artistes being expected to bring in fans to venues to play for fre

e without any food, drink or cash, we decided it was time for some action. We believe that if us music lovers pull together – artists, creatives and music industry professionals – everything is possible. We know we’re not the only people doing this, and we welcome and celebrate the other collectives springing up all over the place. It’s not just about musicians and songwriters being in command of their careers – it’s about music makers, music lovers and music professionals from all angles finding new ways to work together. We want to make sure we can all make a living and get great music out there and into the world’s ears – while making sure that those that create it are treasured, valued and rewarded. Today we are about ethically run showcases with partners including SESAC and the MMF; both formal and informal networking events; nurturing talent; making collaborative intros; and curating songwriting retreats. We have a full Pro Tools HD Studio full of a mixture warm old vintage, and new top of the range mics, outboard and instruments; and we can be involved in the entire recording process from start to finish for both demos and full on records. Many of us have been involved in the process of writing and recording a record from start to delivery countless times; and the rest of us have been had long careers in the bit that followed – whether label, promo, publishing or distribution. We have a passion for great lyrics; for music that does something new; and music that does something old with style; great performers at the height of their powers; and rough diamonds needing a little work. Just one or two shows every couple of months to keep the bar high and a commitment to support the acts that play for us long before and after they jump aboard the Karousel. Musicians running gigs for musicians, with the backbone and common sense of some experienced record buying, artist loving independent music industry veterans: Sound good? Karousel Music is a bedroll and campfire of the soul in the concrete woods for great artists, songwriters, producers, engineeers and independent professionals based both in the UK and abroad: A come-and-go-as-you-please, merry-go-round of co-operation and feel good. Last night saw our 600th showcase slot for artists in front of industry where they keep 100% of the ticket proceeds (after the amazing Mikey gets paid for the sound). We’re so grateful to for sponsoring the last 11/12 years and investing in the UK’s grassroots songwriters and artists. It’s been our most important relationship alongside our publishing relationship with . So grateful also to for partnering, and for the truly industry shaping work they have been doing year on year, ever since we’ve been members, and since took the reins. Next year will be the eighth year we have collaborated together and there is simply no better spend of your money in the Music industry than a membership there. It is a quite extraordinary team and we are so grateful to be part of the community.

A special thank you to all the venues who have supported these nights so far as well. has been a wonderful home for a decade now, and we are also so grateful to our friends at and as well as (headCRASH) where we’ve had glorious nights.

Until Feb when we go again, here’s the brilliant acts from last night who did us so proud!
👊🏻❤️ As the unstoppable says, you’re IDOLS and you all belong here. See you in Feb!

Out today - such a great record, tunes, playing and we have to say, we love that sleeve as well! Give it a listen - Singer and guitarist Doug was a co founder of Karousel with us after we adapted it from the Karamel Collective - after taking a pause following his exploits with Longview. Angie who plays keys and sings is also a member of The Magic Numbers, but really, it's all about what they've made together here. So good to see one of our crew going back to what it was all about in the first place and that's songs and records. Go Miniseries!

Our debut album, Pilot, is out in the world today. Stream or download wherever you get your music or better yet, order a physical copy. These have been slightly delayed but we’ll get them to you asap either via our online store or from your favourite indie store.

There is too much to say about this record but I’ll try and keep it brief. Today we reach the destination of a decades-long journey. I hope the band will forgive me for telling my own story - it wouldn’t have happened without every one of us (including of course Sean Read and Craig Potter). As a band, Miniseries has put so much into its creation since 2022, then before that it was just me and Angie recording demos at home. But for me it’s also a product of the crushing disappointment of spending 6 years on a record with my old band that never saw the light of day. Of giving up entirely on music for another 6 years after the dissolution of that band. Overcoming years of self-doubt.

I’ve spent hour upon hour listening back to this record, scrutinising every second of music, wondering if this lyric could have been better or if I could have phrased something differently - can I even sing? The last play count on my phone’s offline music player is 271 plays. I love this record and it’s my proudest achievement but I’ve also been through every emotion with it. Today is the day I let it go. Today it’s yours to love, like, be indifferent to, dislike or hate.

The last few weeks have been stressful - from worrying about the manufacturing issues to whether anyone will review it, what they will say etc. I’ve now realised that none of that matters. All that matters now is that it exists. We brought something to life that wasn’t there before.

Pilot is yours

Doug

The PPL - Phonographic Performance Ltd board elections are coming up soon. Both Roxanne De Bastion () and Hannah Joseph have long, consistent and successful careers in advocating for positive change for artists and musicians and we'll be voting for them, and we think you should too, if you haven't already decided who to vote for. You get two votes, and we're saying this having known them both for many years. Roxanne as an artist, songwriter and advocate via the FAC, and running her own musician and artist facing conference; and Hannah as a massively successful artist and producer manager, amongst other things.

PPL has the power to do so much good. It is so important that these orgs have people on their boards with a genuine track record of advocacy. We've long fought for there to be a change to the way session musicians (non featured artists) are treated: First in the way there is no royalty paid to them when they are replaced in the live band by their own performance in the studio on a stem, losing live work for no compensation despite their performance being broadcast live, in a licensed venue that pays PPL a license fee. There's no excuse for this in the modern world. And second, that there's zero for session musicians and non featured performers at streaming. We MUST change this, and the assumption that trained, professional musicians who have become top of their game after years and years of study and practice are at the bottom of the food chain, or this absolutely integral role in our ecosystem will fast become a non viable career, and EVERYTHING will suffer. But also, we need to continue fighting for artists, and featured performers whose brilliance gives work to those session players in the first place.

Eligible members should have received an email from [email protected] with a link to the voting page. But you can also try this direct link which should work: https://secure.cesvotes.com/V3-3-0/pplapmb2025/en/login?bbp=116729&x=-1

There may be 100,000 tracks a day uploaded to Spotify, but I would wager less than 0.00034% of them have the beauty consistently weaved by the undimmable light that is The Magic Lantern. A songwriter who makes art and nothing less, and we’re beyond proud to be a little part of his world. ❤️

Simply no words can capture the value of the great Danny Thompson as a musician and person. The records he helped to make truly great have endured half a century, and will last for a great many more. The bass player so many aspired to be; a player so many artists hoped their bandmates could get within a thousand miles of for them. Thanks for everything Danny.
