About Kali Theatre

Kali Theatre was founded in 1990 by Rita Wolf and Rukhsana Ahmad to encourage, support and promote new theatre writing by women from a South Asian background. Kali is the UK’s only theatre company dedicated to championing women writers from a South Asian background. We focus on content and ideas as much as on style to present memorable theatre based on challenging and innovative ideas. No idea is too small, no statement too large. We actively encourage our writers and audience to reinvent and reshape the theatrical agenda.

Are you passionate about theatre but frustrated by the lack of diversity in the boardroom?

Kali Theatre is recruiting new trustees. CLOSING NEXT WEEK!

We are specifically looking for senior arts professionals with production or management backgrounds and people with finance and legal expertise.

We strongly encourage applications from those with diverse backgrounds and particularly want to hear from people with access needs.

Kali Theatre are proud to present STATION (WIP)
by Hussina Raja

The Albany Theatre, Deptford, London.

As part of her Kalisthenics Artist Residency Hussina has been developing a new iteration of her immersive living-room installation STATION to bring to The Albany this autumn.

Part live performance, part gathering space, part pure jokes, the showcase is an evolving work-in-progress celebrating female strength and collective power; based on her own lived experience as a new mum. Hussina has built the show talking to mothers in Lewisham, about their own hopes and feelings and their new future.

Developed in collaboration with choreographer Vidya Patel and musician Fran Lobo.

As part of our Kalisthenics Exhibition, we need YOUR HELP.

We’re looking for South Asian female and non-binary icons to be photographed by Alia Romagnoli, and displayed in our exhibition at Soho Theatre Spring 2027.

We need YOU to nominate your favourite South Asian Icon from any area. Sport, media, arts, medicine, academia, journalism - you name it!

As ever, we encourage nominations of people with mixed abilities, as well as from q***r and LGBTQ+ communities.

Selected nominees will be invited to a studio session in London at The Photography Foundation in Greenwich on 19th September.

Our 6 - month writers development programme for aspiring South Asian female and non-binary playwrights is returning.

Expert playwriting workshops, 1-1 mentoring and support to write a short play and a public showcase with professional actors presenting your play.

We are hosting a TASTER session for any playwrights who might benefit from this opportunity. To hear more about the programme, the application process and the support you receive.

We are keen to hear from people across the country, to inform our planning, and try and reach as many aspiring South Asian Playwrights as possible.

OPEN CALL!

We are looking to cast new South Asian mums and babies for a photoshoot with Alia Romagnoli as part of our KALISTHENICS season for an Exhibition at Soho Theatre in Spring 2027.

Studio session date: 18th July, 2026 for 30/45 minutes between 10.30am and 6pm at the Photography Foundation, Greenwich, London.

Travel for the photography session provided. You will also have access to your gorgeous new pictures! All shapes, sizes and zero experience needed. Trans, non-binary and q***r parents encouraged to apply.
Places are limited for the shoot.

Deadline to apply: 1st July, midday.
