[New] A cult classic pressed for its 15th anniversary.

HTRK () delivered Work (work, work) (GI-144), their Ghostly debut, like a statement of intent, issuing a staggeringly prescient album that set a course for what was to come, both culturally and internally.

Work (work, work) emerged from the grief surrounding the sudden loss of founding HTRK member and bassist Sean Stewart in 2010. While the tragedy certainly found its way into the music's bottomless sonic void, the album traversed far more than abject darkness, rendering a study of desire and submission, sentimentality, and dysphoria.

Marked by achingly slow 808 beats, eerie synth arpeggios, and vaporous guitar noise, with Jonnine Standish's () singular sense of emotive detachment, Work (work, work) registered immediately as bleak, abrasive, and melancholic. Yet, across a decade-plus of legacy and lore, deeper listens through the murky, minimalist set reveal a romantic core. Something Standish and would surface further in the years to follow.

Now, the long-out-of-print LP returns in a new, clear ash vinyl edition with a detachable paper Obi exclusive, out August 28th. Link in bio.

"The Portland musician attempted to outrun his lo-fi beats past (and gargantuan streaming count) on his 2021 Ghostly debut The Long and Short of It, a winningly idiosyncratic mix of basement boom-bap, homebrewed neo-soul, and inside-out indie pop. This time, he reaffirms his love of Jon Brion and Elliott Smith, dialing up both the melody and the charm. Probably the sweetest album I heard this year, the kind you want to bring home to meet your parents." - on , best albums of the year

Growing up in a family immersed in jazz, Latin and soul music, Brijean Murphy would become an accomplished DJ, session and live player in Oakland’s music scene and one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls). In 2018, she began recording songs with multi-instrumentalist and producer Doug Stuart (), who shares a background in jazz and pop in bands such as Bells Atlas, Meernaa, and Luke Temple. Following their first sessions, which resulted in the mini-album Walkie Talkie, the duo continued freeform hangs in Oakland, inviting friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers, and Hamir Atwal. “We improvised on different feels for hours,” says Murphy. “Nothing quite developed at first but we had seeds. We re-opened the sessions a couple months later, after returning from tours, and spent a month developing the songs in a little 400 square foot cottage.”

Maybe the murder of screeching crows that surrounded Connecticut's Clubhouse Studio—turning all the trees jet black—was a sign that something was up with its latest tenants, Xeno & Oaklander. Well, that and the lunar eclipse that lit the starry night sky while Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride (.canterel) plowed through another propulsive minimal-synth piece called "Palms."

"We've always referred to our synths as elemental," says Wendelbo. "Fire is what powers energy, voltage, and electricity. Electromagnetism is electric energy, like lightning in the sky. We control it with potentiometers and buttons; we shape it with filters and envelopes."

Two landmark Lusine () LPs return on vinyl in limited obi edition colorways this summer, A Certain Distance (GI-87) and Sensorimotor (GI-287).

In anticipation of new music from one of Ghostly's longest-running roster artists, we've brought two fan favorites back into circulation. A Certain Distance (2009) and Sensorimotor (2017) are bookends of a productive period in the Seattle producer's expansive catalog, venturing into vocal experimentation and avant-pop, but never leaving his core ambient and experimental sound behind.

Hosono () also announces The Yours Sincerely Tour in North America this September, headlining Radio City Music Hall in NY and the Greek Theatre in LA, with support from Toro y Moi ().

The pioneering Japanese musician, producer, composer, and founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Happy End, has “found his voice in a late career renaissance," writes The Wire, cited as an influence by an acclaimed list of artists, including Mac DeMarco, Cameron Winter, Ginger Root, Vampire Weekend, Harry Styles, and more. Shaped by mid-century American music, Hosono's work now reverberates back through a new generation of Western artists—a remarkable circular exchange.

“I am now 78 years old, but from here on, I feel a growing curiosity toward the unknown music that my new self will create, while also embracing the music of my former self—as if I now carry two musical worlds within me,” Hosono remarks.

The transformative work ponders a simple question. How do you express the Japanese ideas of omoiyari (思い遣り), jihi (慈悲), or boseiai (母性愛) in English? Hosono explains, “I searched, but no word felt quite right. Each came close, yet carried a slightly different nuance…I turned to a more familiar word often used to close a letter: ‘Sincerely.’”

“It is in this spirit that I offer this album to you—sincerely, from the heart.”
